Sometimes, it’s hard to realize how much unnecessary stimuli you have around you constantly in the urban-dominated world we live in today. The path to healing may very well lie in the embrace of the great outdoors.
Located in the heart of central Pennsylvania, Shaver’s Creek has been connecting people to people and people to place since 1976. We provide educational and recreational opportunities for families, schools, corporate groups, and Penn State students. Come hike a trail, see live animals up close, learn about conservation, and enjoy our programs.
Shaver’s Creek is committed to extending Penn State’s Outreach mission of instruction, service, and research. Through quality programs, we teach, model, and provide the knowledge, values, skills, experiences, and dedication that enable individuals and communities to achieve and maintain harmony between human activities and the natural systems that support all living species.

Who is she? 🤭
This vibrant spring flower is called a Pink Lady's Slipper. Were you struck by her bright pink color? Well, you might be a bee! (Sorry if this is how you found out) 🐝
Bees are attracted to the Pink Lady Slipper because of it's bright colors and sweet scent - but it's all an elaborate plot. When the bee climbs inside the flower pouch, they're met with all trick and no treat!
They quickly find themselves trapped and unable to return through the front slit. Instead, they are forced through a different exit, brushing past a stigma to deposit any pollen they may already have. They also must maneuver under a pollen mass, picking up some new pollen before they finally escape and head to their next flower. It's like an escape room for a bee! 🗝️
Overall, it's a pretty ingenious strategy that this unassuming flower has evolved. Keep your eye out for these beauties hidden along the parking lot trail next time you visit Shaver's Creek!
