Sundiode has developed a monolithic, vertically stacked RGB microLED pixel technology for microLED displays, targeting high‐resolution, full‐color display applications including AR/MR/VR and wearables. Crucial to the technology is an innovative pixel‐device architecture comprising vertically stacked red, green, and blue (RGB) multi‐junction LEDs (MJ‐LEDs). This contrasts with conventional pixel configurations in microLED displays, all having laterally laid‐out subpixel LEDs. The result is more than 2‐fold pixel‐size reduction that leads to many advantages in the areas of AR/MR/VR. The vertically stacked microLEDs in an MJ‐LED are completely independently controlled, thus making RGB color generation possible from a single‐footprint pixel device.
