  • ■ 2nd South Korean factory to be selected as a “Lighthouse Factory” by the World Economic Forum after POSCO
    ■ Addition of ESG solution to digital-based manufacturing technology acknowledged to be the next generation in manufacturing competitiveness
    ■ Expanded sharing of smart factory technology for strengthening the competitiveness of South Korea’s SMEs

LS ELECTRIC has been selected in 2021 as a “World Lighthouse Factory” that could lead the future of global manufacturing industries beyond South Korea. It was the second South Korean company to be selected for this honor after POSCO in 2019.

On September 29, LS ELECTRIC’s Cheongju Smart Factory was selected as a “Lighthouse Factory” by the World Economic Forum (WEF, Davos Forum) at the 2021 WEF Lighthouse Factory Annual Meeting. Last year, the annual meeting was held as a non-face-to-face online event due to the spread of COVID-19 worldwide.

A “Lighthouse Factory” refers to a factory that creates a new model of manufacturing performance through the active use of key technologies (IoT, AI, cloud, etc.) that will drive the Fourth Industrial Revolution, just as a lighthouse illuminates the dark seas to guide ships to shores. Since 2018, the World Economic Forum has been conducting annual audits (usually lasting more than 6 months) of factories all over the world. At the end of an audit, and twice a year, WEF announces the list of lighthouse factories.

This year’s annual conference was held online and attended by Chairman Koo Ja-yeol of the LS Group. “The selection of LS ELECTRIC as a lighthouse factory is a great feat for the LS Group, which has been making a lot of effort in digital transformation. Especially for our affiliates that have yet to complete the digitalization of their manufacturing operations, we expect this recognition to yield many practical benefits,” he said.

If the 21 factories newly designated as “World Lighthouse Factory” this year are sorted according to region/country, 3 can be found in Europe, 3 are in the US, 13 are in Asia, and 2 are in the Middle East. The factories are operated by some of the world’s major companies like Johnson & Johnson, Schneider Electric, Foxconn, etc. Only 90 companies around the world, including the 21 newly selected companies, hold the title “World Lighthouse Factory.”

LS ELECTRIC was not content with simply implementing AI and IoT technology at its power equipment smart manufacturing plant in Cheongju. The level of integration is such that the plant not only responds flexibly to the requirements of many different customers but can also produce in mass volumes because it achieved drastic cost reductions through increased production efficiencies. This is what the World Economic Forum regarded highly when it was reviewing LS ELECTRIC.

Furthermore, LS ELECTRIC declared its commitment to ESG management, which is indispensable for continued corporate growth; it increased energy efficiency by developing its own energy management solution (EMS) and implementing it in an actual plant. According to the World Economic Forum, this is another reason for designating the LS ELECTRIC plant as a “World Lighthouse Factory.”

LS ELECTRIC’s Cheongju plant has adopted many technologies that form the backbone of a smart factory: ▲ IoT-based automated system for the changing equipment model that is capable of mass production of multiple product types; ▲ self-driving robots that handle inventory; ▲ AI-based real-time automatic welding system; and △ machine learning-based noise vibration test system. The plant also uses Big Data analysis service to share raw material data, production data, and quality data in real time with suppliers.

“It is very meaningful to us that our Cheongju plant, built with our own smart factory technologies, has been selected as a ‘Lighthouse Factory’ that could illuminate the future of manufacturing across the world. We will not only make the world's best products by expanding the application of smart technologies on the field but also spare no effort in building smart factories for SMEs so that South Korea's manufacturing competitiveness could be upgraded to the next level,” an LS ELECTRIC representative said.

  •  On March 17, LS ELECTRIC took part in SIEFKSGE ••• eco-friendly power equipmentsmart diagnostic system gains interest.

    ■ “Visitors were able to see the results of our innovation efforts to meet digitalESG megatrends”

LS ELECTRIC introduced solutions optimized for ESG trends that are based on the company's digital and eco-friendly energy technologies.

During the 3-day period from March 17 to 19, LS ELECTRIC participated in the Seoul International Electric Fair (SIEF)· Korea Smart Grid Expo (KSGE) 2022 which is the country’s most prominent expo for smart power and energy industry. The event was held at the COEX Center (3rd FL, HALL C) in Samsung-dong, Seoul, and LS ELECTRIC exhibited its solutions in a combined booth.

In an exhibition space featuring 30 booths (270) which was the largest among the participating companies, LS ELECTRIC showcased ESG and DX solutions under the concept of ‘DX-based ESG Solution Partner'.

The ESG solutions included eco-friendly products such as the eco-friendly 170kV 50kA grade GIS(gas-insulated switchgear) that uses eco-friendly insulator g3 gas (CO2, O2, Fluorinated Nitrile hybrid gas) which was developed last year for the first time in South Korea, as well as eco-friendly vegetable oil transformer with insulating oil that can be decomposed by microorganisms, and superconducting fault current limiter that optimizes energy efficiency and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System).

In particular, solutions for safety which is the core concern in ESG management, also gained attention in the market. LS ELECTRIC's "Integrated System for Wide Area Monitoring and Diagnosis of Power Transmission/Distribution" can monitor and diagnose in advance component defects that could occur during the operation of power facilities and failures caused by natural deterioration. This is a feature that could improve the safety of power facilities. Through the web-based wide-area monitoring system, consolidated monitoring of facilities in all workplaces is possible either locally or overseas, while abnormalities in facilities can be identified anytime and anywhere.

Along with the above, other safety and diagnostic solutions were shown. For example, the LS E-health check app enables users to monitor the environment surrounding power facilities, diagnose safety, and check facility lifespan information in real time. Smart Panel SAFE GUARD was an IoT and ICT technology-based solution that finds the location of circuit breakers on fire in real time and transmits the information, so that damages caused by electrical short circuits or a fire could be prevented.

In DX, the integrated service for managing smart grid facilities called GridSol CARE was in the spotlight. In GridSol CARE, systems are monitored in real time through sensors attached to power generation equipment. Through comparative analysis with existing big data on product quality, abnormalities are detected in advance and appropriate measures can be taken promptly. As a result, the system prevents accidents through diagnosis and management.

GridSol CARE combines LS ELECTRIC's know-how in power system design with digital technologies such as IoT sensors and wireless communication to offer expanded monitoring for the entire power generation system, from low voltage to high voltage systems. To date, monitoring is only available for power distribution centers. Moreover, since GridSol CARE is provided as a cloud-based service, the energy usage patterns of customers can be analyzed to provide consulting to customers on optimizing their use of energy. Service users can check the status of their power generation system using their smartphones or other mobile devices anytime and anywhere and then make adjustments to maintain the status.

Other ESG solutions based on digital technologies were also be exhibited, such as ▲ PCS (Power Conditioning System) for ESS (Energy Storage System), solar power generation and O&M solution, ▲ next-generation smart DC distribution solution, ▲ electric vehicle charging solution, and ▲ smart factory.

An official from LS ELECTRIC said, “With ESG gaining traction in lockstep with digital transformation, LS ELECTRIC has already engaged in business creating technological innovations, so that it can proactively meet these megatrends head on,” adding that “this will be an opportunity to demonstrate how our competitive advantage in the digital and eco-friendly sectors is formidable in the local and global arena”.

  • SF6 Free 170kV 50kA 60Hz GIS
To respond to the needs of global low-carbon policies, we has developed the 170kV 50kA GIS which uses non-toxic g3 gas through technical cooperation with GE for the first time in the world....

  • The GIS is one of the main protection devices for power equipment installed in power plants and substations. As an ultra-high voltage equipment, it protects the power system by quickly shutting off the fault current. Usually, SF6 gas is used for the GIS.  However, the gas leak is extremely dangerous and becomes the main culprit of global warming. To respond to the needs of global low-carbon policies, LS ELECTRIC has developed the 170kV 50kA GIS which uses non-toxic g3 gas through technical cooperation with GE for the first time in the world. Together with KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation), we already completed the demonstration project successfully at the Wanggok substation last year. We are looking forward to the installation of the new GIS in more locations.
