The Dynaris Apogee, the only portable oxygen system adjusting for unilateral nasal resistance may extend patient mobility. Until now, oxygen has been delivered equally to each nostril - regardless of conditions such as a deviated septum. Most of us ‘nasal cycle’; alternating breathing through a single dominate naris. This raises concerns for patients receiving oxygen whenever a nasal passage closes. A recent study showed that FiO2 significantly dropped when this occurs. This suggests that patients are titrated at higher flow settings than otherwise needed to compensate for oxygen lost to the blocked nostril. Conversely, if both nasal passages are open during titration, patients may not receive enough oxygen if one naris later closes. The Apogee addresses these issues by sensing and delivering oxygen only to the most patent naris. Users report improved saturation levels at lower liter flow settings, less nasal trauma and up to 10 times longer cylinder duration. The Apogee may be especially effective for patients needing higher liter flows-offering considerable improvements over portable oxygen concentrators and traditional conservers.
