  • Dr. El-Fahmawi channels years of varied experience into his work with Mawi DNA Technologies

    HAYWARD, CA, July 7, 2022, Dr. Bassam El-Fahmawi has been included in Marquis Who’s Who. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process. 

    After Dr. El-Fahmawi and his wife experienced a horrifying medical mystery involving their daughter, he was determined to ensure that other parents didn’t have to encounter the same circumstances by dedicating his career to improving medical diagnostics and science. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from Kuwait University in 1988, he began working for his alma mater as a teaching and research assistant while pursuing a Master of Science in medical microbiology and bacteriology. Following his commencement from graduate school in 1990, he became a researcher with the Institute of Science Research and worked as a medical sales representative for Eli Lilly & Co. Dr. El-Fahmawi later gained valuable expertise as a product manager for RAM Pharma, where he developed business plans, marketing strategies and the budget for new product launches, and as a medical lab manager for Prince Fahd Bin Sultan Hospital through which he managed a laboratory with a $1 million budget.

    Dr. El-Fahmawi expanded upon his expertise by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology and biotechnology from the University of Alberta in 2005, where he also expressed a commitment to civic advocacy by serving as president for Michener Park University Family Housing. He honed his business acumen skills through management and marketing positions with such companies as MJS BioLynx/Canada, Agencourt Bioscience, Beckman Coulter Genomics, Corning Life Sciences and Bioneer Inc. Between 2003 and 2014, Dr. El-Fahmawi managed a multi-million dollar automated DNA extraction and sequencing product line with Beckman Coulter Genomics, and established Bioneer’s medical biology business within the United States, while simultaneously developing the technology and business plan for his new venture.

    Drawing on years of professional experience, Dr. El-Fahmawi presently excels as Chief Technical Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Mawi DNA Technologies. Since 2014, he developed and commercialized iSWAB, the company’s unique non-invasive sample collection core technology. Dr. El-Fahmawi also built and supported the company’s infrastructure and sales activities, and expanded upon the company’s intellectual property portfolio. He has contributed his wide range of knowledge and expertise to articles in professional journals in areas such as “Separation apparatus and methods of separating magnetic material” and “Exploring Protein-protein interactions.”

    To keep in touch with developments affecting his field, Dr. El-Fahmawi aligns himself with the American Society for Microbiology. To commemorate his accomplishments, he was recognized in the 16th edition of Who’s Who in the World. In a career filled with highlights, he is most proud of inventing innovative technologies for the non-invasive and invasive collection of biological samples for room temperature transport and storage. Looking toward the future, Dr. El-Fahmawi intends to expand the company on an international scale and introduce new products that solve real world problems.

This approval includes Mawi’s HemaSure-OMICS whole blood collection tubes for gDNA, cfDNA, and RNA from the same sample and the NextSWAB 100% injection molded swab.

    The CE Certification, internationally recognized, signifies that Mawi’s products conform to European and UK medical device directives. With CE Mark and UK MHRA approval, Mawi is able to commercialize its full range of products in the UK, European Union and all countries recognizing this molecular diagnostic assays standard.

  • The iSWAB™-DNA device allows for the collection and stabilization of DNA at the point of collection without the need for swab inclusion. Typical yields of between 10-30μg (iSWAB-DNA-1200) and 5-15μg (iSWAB-DNA-250) of DNA with <1% bacterial contamination can be achieved. The gentle collection and lysis chemistry of the alcohol-free iSWAB buffer allows for the recovery of double-stranded, large fragment DNA similar to the genomic DNA generated from blood, making it suitable for complex genomics downstream assays such as microarrays and Next Generation Sequencing. Suitable for all ages, ethnicities, races, and genders. Ideal for: Paternity Testing, Genealogy, Ancestry, Population Studies, and Genomics.

  • HemaSure-OMICS is a sterile, plastic, single use, prefilled evacuated direct-draw blood collection with stabilization solution. These components serve to transport venous whole blood samples that is designed to protect RNA molecules from degradation by ribonucleases (RNases), prevent induction of gene expression and to use in conjunction with cell-free DNA purification. AVAILABLE IN 3mL, 6mL, & 9mL.

    The device is intended to be placed inside a tube holder or an adaptor that contains a needle designed to pierce the tube closure and allow blood to flow into the tube. Once the vein has been penetrated (using a standard blood collection needle or winged infusion), the tube is pushed into the holder, and the blood enters the tube. Once a tube has drawn the appropriate amount of blood as per the fill volume range marked on the HemaSure-OMICS tube label, it is disengaged from the holder and inverted gently10 times to mix the stabilizing additive with the blood. The specimen is then transported to the lab for plasma isolation and extraction of RNA and cfDNA.

  • The iSWAB-RNAv2 device is a non-invasive technology for the collection, concentration, and stabilization of intact buccal cells or any mammalian cells collected with a swab or cytobrush allowing for real time ambient stabilization of total RNA from the point of collection to processing. The design of the iSWAB collection device allows for the maximum release of collected samples from multiple swabs or brushes into a single device, to achieve a more concentrated sample. Self collection or assisted collection can be achieved in less than 2 minutes and is suitable for all population segments including infants, toddlers, and elderlies.

    The iSWAB™-RNA-v2 maintains RNA stability and protects RNA from degradation. The device allows extended shelf life stability (up to 4 weeks at room temp, several years at -20 C and -80 C), reduced processing time, and minimal storage footprint.

  • The iSWAB™-DSC Collection device is a non-invasive and nontoxic sample collection technology for the collection, stabilization, concentration, transport, and storage of DNA samples. It is a swab-based sampling applicator and is intended to be used for sample collection of buccal cells. The DNA collection device for human use is designed to capture samples producing high yields of double stranded, long fragmented DNA between 2-7μg with <1% bacterial contamination using traditional sampling swabs.

    The iSWAB™-DSC collection device is intended for the collection of double-stranded, large fragment DNA at the point of collection without the need for swab inclusion. The gentle collection and lysis chemistry of the nontoxic iSWAB™-DSC buffer allows for recovery of DNA similar to the genomic DNA generated from blood, making it suitable for complex genomics downstream assays such as microarrays, NGS, and Sanger sequencing. The device can be used for ambient temperature (15-30 °C) transport and storage.  Ideal for: paternity testing, genealogy, ancestry, population genomics, cancer research, HLA typing, and epidemiology.
