 Press Releases

  • JEOL USA has announced the addition of two new products to its nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) portfolio. The  2mm Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR Probe for Solids and Pre-Heat Auto-Sample Changer (ASC) expand JEOL’s extensive offering of advanced NMR solutions for polymer research, materials science and biosolids.

The 2mm MAS NMR Probe is well suited for both materials and biosolids NMR. The 2mm MAS Probe is the ideal compromise in the trade-off between the E-field heating problems for biosolids samples found in larger diameter probes and the reduced sensitivity of smaller diameter probes. Biosolids samples are expensive to produce due to the need for biosynthetic labeling with 13C, 15N or 2H, so protecting sample integrity by reducing E-field heating is vital. The increased sensitivity of the 2mm MAS Probe allows for direct detection of 13C or 15N which is not practical with smaller diameter rotors.

The larger RF fields and higher spinning speeds produced by the 2mm MAS probe are also ideally suited for materials science NMR investigations of Quadrupolar and other nuclei, for example 19F. Quadrupolar nuclei NMR studies benefit from the larger RF fields by improving excitation range resulting in improved sensitivity. The higher spinning speeds help to remove ambiguities caused by the potential overlap of spinning sidebands with NMR peaks of interest.

In addition to the 2mm MAS NMR Probe for Solids, JEOL USA has released the new Pre-Heat ASC30, which builds on the company’s proven room temperature (RT) and Pre-Cool ASC technology for polymer research. The tool is able to pre-heat 12 samples to up to 150°C, and supports 5mm and 10mm NMR tubes. The system is available for 400, 500 and 600 MHz NMR instruments and is compatible with RT ROYAL and SuperCool NMR probes, and fully integrates with JEOL Delta NMR software.

Dr. Michael Frey, Analytical Instruments Product Manager, JEOL USA, Inc. commented: “The addition of the newly designed 2mm MAS Probe to JEOL’s range offers faster MAS than the 3.2mm rotor, larger RF fields than the 3.2mm HX MAS probes, and a larger sample volume than the 1mm or 0.75mm rotors, completing the range while improving NMR performance for materials science and biosolids applications. With the new Pre-Heat ASC30, polymer scientists will benefit from minimized sample cooling during sample loading, and see important time savings in temperature equilibration for kinetic melting samples.”

With over 50 years of experience in NMR spectroscopy and established partnerships with industry experts, JEOL USA is continually expanding its offering with ongoing innovations, to meet the needs of researchers in a broad range of fields.

  • The new JMS-TQ4000GC answers the need for an ultrahigh-speed triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer that accurately measures trace or residual pesticides in agricultural materials, trace levels of regulated chemicals in tap water, and simplifies quantitative analysis of persistent environmental pollutants such as dioxins and PCB’s.

Rapid Selected Reaction Monitoring Switching Speed

JEOL brings a new level of high throughput and performance to the widely-used “Triple Quad” mass spec technology. The JMS-TQ4000GC achieves the fastest Selected Reaction Monitoring (SRM) switching speed in the industry at 1,000 channels/sec. Chemists can analyze multiple target compounds with high accuracy.

Short Collision Cell Technology for Fast and Accurate Quantitative Values

The JMS-TQ4000GC design features a new short-collision-cell technology that provides several benefits:

    • ion accumulation with reduced noise level
    • rapid pulsed ion ejection without crosstalk (ion interaction among SRM channels)
    • high-speed GC measurement that expedites routine analysis

The short collision cell accumulates ions and ejects them in rapid pulses. The noise level of the signal is reduced by synchronizing the timing between pulsed ion ejection and signal acquisition, making high sensitivity analysis possible.

Fast GC Leads to Shorter Acquisition Times

The fastest SRM speed in the industry at 1000 transitions per second makes it possible to implement Fast GC, leading to shorter acquisition times. Using small-diameter and short-length capillary columns enables rapid heating and reduces measurement time, providing faster routine analysis without loss of sensitivity.

    Streamlined Data Management Software

With simultaneous multi-component analysis, chromatograms are arranged in a vertical column making it easy to compare samples. Combined with the compound slideshow function, the JMS-TQ1000GC software makes it easy for the chemist to confirm all samples and components.

    Higher Throughput for Total Analysis

Combining rapid channel selection, short collision cell technology, and rapid GC technology, the new JEOL GC/triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer delivers unprecedented high throughput and high stability for repeated analyses.

    Wide Range of Organic Analyses

In addition to the standard electron ionization (EI) source, the JMS-TQ4000GC also supports optional chemical ionization (CI) and photoionization (PI) sources, enabling easy acquisition of molecular weight information. The system is not limited to GC-MS. It is also possible to perform analysis with 2 types of direct insertion probes.

  • JEOL USA has established an OEM agreement with SpectralWorks, Ltd. (UK) to distribute AnalyzerPro® software for use with JEOL’s mass spectrometer systems.  AnalyzerPro®’s functions for chromatographic deconvolution, target compound identification, sample-to-sample comparison and chemometric analysis provide powerful tools for examining the data from JEOL’s mass spectrometers, in particular the JEOL AccuTOF-GCx-plus high-resolution time-of-flight GC/MS system.  Example applications of AnalyzerPro® with the AccuTOF-GCX-plus include analysis of coffees from different geographic regions1 and comparison of two different vinyl acetate samples analyzed by pyrolysis GC/MS2.  AnalyzerPro® is also available through JEOL in Europe and Japan.

SpectralWorks Ltd3 is a leading UK based software development company dedicated to providing innovative solutions targeted for markets within the life sciences industry and having strong working relationships with a number of the major instrument manufacturers.

  • JEOL has developed a new software package, msFineAnalysis, to enhance qualitative analysis of compounds using high-resolution GC-mass spectrometry. The new software takes qualitative GC-MS analysis to a whole new level with the JEOL AccuTOF-GCx PLUS mass spectrometer. msFineAnalysis integrates the information from multiple ionization techniques with database search, exact mass, and isotope data. The report compares the spectral matches from a NIST or NIST-formatted mass spectral database search with elemental composition information from soft-ionization exact-mass data analysis. msFineAnalysis ensures accurate qualitative results, reduces the possibility of false positive identifications, and selects the correct components from multiple candidates with similar database search scores but with different compositions.

For unknown components not registered in the mass spectral databases, the program determines the elemental composition for the intact molecule by using the soft ionization data obtained with the mass spectrometer. Elemental compositions are reported for fragment ions in the electron ionization (EI) data. If both GC / EI data and the corresponding GC / soft ionization method data are available, all five qualitative analysis processes are automatically performed on the peaks detected on the chromatogram.

The 4th generation AccuTOF-GCx-plus high-resolution mass spectrometer offers three optional soft‐ionization techniques including photo ionization (PI), chemical ionization (CI), and field ionization (FI), as well as the standard electron ionization (EI) source. Switching between EI and PI can be done without changing the ion source. Likewise, the EI/FI/FD combination ion source allows for GC/EI, GC/FI, and FD analysis without requiring a source change.

The AccuTOF-GCx-plus supports several software methods and tools to simplify the analysis of GC/HRMS and GCxGC/HRMS data sets from complex mixtures such as crude oil and environmental contaminants. msFine Analysis simplifies and streamlines the task of interpreting GC/HRMS qualitative analysis results by combining all of the available information into a unified report.

  • JEOL has achieved a major expansion in the quantitative and statistical analysis capability of its Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometers (NMR) through collaboration with the developer of the revolutionary CRAFT (Complete Reduction to Amplitude-Frequency Table) data processing technique.

In conjunction with the recent JEOL DELTA NMR software release 5.3.0, CRAFT for DELTA V1.0 provides direct time domain-to-spreadsheet analysis, allowing for more objective extraction of quantitative information for compounds of interest, provides statistical analysis for metabolomics, reaction monitoring, or quality control.  Peaks that are too close to effectively quantify by traditional integration are completely resolved sinusoids in the time domain with separate information of frequency, amplitude, phase, and decay rate available as numbers in a table.

Pioneering work for CRAFT direct time-domain analysis of NMR data was begun by Dr. Krish Krishnamurthy and first published in 2013, and the work was extended to 2D NMR in 2016.  By utilizing Bayesian analysis of the time domain spectrum, CRAFT bypasses many issues brought about by Fourier transform to a visual frequency dimension.

“The integration of CRAFT with DELTA version 5.3 software allows the JEOL NMR user to automatically and efficiently extract the best amplitudes and frequency from NMR data,” said Dr. Mike Frey, NMR Product Manager.
