Understanding Organic Chemistry is an unique experiential textbook and teaching system where students learn durable foundational concepts and analytical methods. Developed as a result of her extensive experience teaching organic chemistry by Dr. Barbara van Kuiken, the Kaye and Michael Elton Professor of Chemistry at Southern Virginia University, her textbook and teaching system echews rote memorization and instead focuses on teaching students how to analyze and actively solve problems. Rather than simply memorizing a catalog of reactions, students using her textbook and system learn how to evaluate and think through a reaction. This creates versatile learners who understand how organic chemistry works and can apply that understanding.
First available to the academic community in Fall 2018, this textbook and teaching system is already showing impressive results. Test scores are typically 20% higher and students report that not only do they understand organic chemistry, they actually enjoy it!
