  • AFS CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT: BRIDEAU ENERGY

    By Barry Aruda, October 2019

Mark Brideau is an oil man. When I meet him in his office this morning, the evidence is clear: Oil is his life. Framed pictures on the wall of days gone by—globe topped gas pumps, antique oil trucks, hard working men of the trade that gave their daily lives over to one thing and one thing only. Delivering quality fuel to their customers, and building trust in the family name. Mark takes that promise to heart to this day.

Mark started in the business making deliveries at age 16, and when his father sold his business in 1982, worked with the new owners until starting Brideau Oil (now Brideau Energy) in 1987. His humble beginnings in the industry led him onto bigger and better things. Acquisitions, an oil crisis in the mid 1970’s, warnings of climate change and, most recently, the changing fuels we call ultra-low sulfur diesel and ultra-low sulfur heating oil. He’s seen it all, and the challenges that come with an ever-changing industry.

“Ultra-low sulfur products have been a hurdle, that’s true. The fire side of the business—that is, burners, heat-exchangers, and those components, have been cleaner, but I think many people don’t realize how much education goes behind the wet side of the business, with fuel storage. Fuel management has become a full-time job.”

The man isn’t wrong. What Mark is alluding to is the challenges that arise with storage of the fuel—namely moisture/water and bacterial contamination—what the industry collectively refers to as “sludge.” And his understanding of those problems is not specific to his two 50,000-gallon tanks, located in Templeton, Mass. In fact, Mark argues, the problems often manifest in the basement oil tanks of homes, when a watchful eye isn’t keeping track of what’s what.

Like any other fuel oil dealer, Mark has a staff of eight field technicians. They’re well trained, experienced, and hard-working. But even the best technician cannot work 24/7. And, you guessed it, Mark knows that as well. That is precisely the reason he made an investment in fuel additives years ago, in 2009.

“Fuel quality is not an issue for us anymore.”

“Service is the backbone of our business,” Mark explains. “My Dad knew that, and I continue that same commitment to this day. Unfortunately, no matter how good someone’s service is, that service won’t matter if a technician has to go back to a customer’s home multiple times for the same fuel quality problem.”

“With our heating oil additive, HeatDoc™, we are able to stabilize the fuel over a long period of time—that’s the time of year when the heating system isn’t being used—call it April to October. During this time, moisture can come from the outside into the tank. By stabilizing the fuel with HeatDoc™, we’re able to ensure when the burner finally calls for oil, they have a good quality fuel.”

All fuels have water in them to some degree. In years past, the sulfur content of those fuels acted as a deterrent to the moisture content, holding it in suspension. When ultra-low sulfur came in, the fuels became more hygroscopic—a big word meaning “likes moisture more.” The fuels, like kitchen sponges, soak up moisture from the atmosphere, but no longer can hold the water, dropping it from the fuel and allowing it to sink the bottom of storage tanks, creating an oil/water interface. Mark trusts his additive package to protect against that.

What’s more a piece of mind for him, is that the HeatDoc™ Program provides corrosion protection, moisture dispersant, a yellow metal deactivator, and a biodiesel stabilizer as well.

“It’s a powerhouse product,” Mark says with a genuine smile. “You should see our spent filters in the slop-sink. They’re cleaner than they’ve ever been. We conduct yearly check-ups now, with some filters in good shape, even after two years’ time. It’s pretty unbelievable that the filter was in great condition after 1300 gallons’ usage.” After 1300 gallons (two years’ time), this filter is still going strong.

But Mark is nothing if not diverse in his business. In addition to heating oil, Brideau Energy also provides on-road and off-road diesel. And you guessed it, it’s treated with an advanced stabilizer package, year-round, specifically suited for diesel.

“Protecting the fuel in the winter is crucial,” Mark says. “I’ve got off-road clients, loggers, whose equipment will sometimes sit outside in the frigid weather for a week. When they go to turn those engines over, they have to work. And they know they will with our premium diesel.”

The diesel Mark is referring to is blended with MDA C5™, heavily dosed with proprietary technology of a Wax Anti-Settling Agent, or WASA, for short. Beyond that, the diesel is fortified with cetane improver, to ensure the combustion happens fast, hot, and clean.

“So, what’s the best part about your experience with premium blends?” I ask him.

With a sip of coffee, he thinks for a moment with his eyes focused on the window. “Well, I can tell you that fuel quality is not an issue for us anymore. But, more importantly, it’s probably the reduction in fuel-related service calls. We’ve all but eliminated them. That’s important because I’ve never been a fan of sending any of my men out at night into the cold. We take care of our people, not just customers, but the people who we count as part of the Brideau Family as well.”

Barry Aruda is the Northeast Territory Manager for Advanced Fuel Solutions. As an admitted “fuel quality fanatic,” he spends a great deal of his full-time job testing fuel for analysis, recommending preventative defensive strategies, and working with dealers to overcome the challenges of housekeeping and changing technology.

Eric Wyson, owner of E.J. Wyson Trucking, Inc., Gardner, MA, began his own company like many do—with a single truck. In his case, it was a 1990 379 Peterbilt. Twenty six years later, Wyson Trucking fleet consists of 22 tractors, with five owner-operator vehicles. On a day-to-day basis, the Wyson trucks can be found hauling petroleum products in cities and towns from Massachusetts to Connecticut, over to New York, and north as well—along the open roads of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Anyone operating a tractor knows the strain placed on their machine. Wyson’s 1990 Peterbilt is a dinosaur compared to the EPA engines of today. And while some may argue that the old rigs were sturdier and more powerful than today’s machinery, the fact remains: we cannot look back. Tier III, IV, & Tier IV Final engines dominate the roadways in 2019.

The newer trucks are complex, led by their High-Pressure Common Rail engines, and recognizable by the little blue cap signifying the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank. The black exhaust of yesteryear has largely been done away with, thanks to Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel, and the soot that each of us remembers flowing into the atmosphere while the truck shifted, is now caught inside the diesel particulate filters (DPFs)—standard on all trucks since the middle of the last decade.

But, if the soot and ash is caught inside the DPF, how does it get remediated? In comes the DEF, designed to automatically blow through the sooty filter when the truck is in use, and the engine has reached approximately 1100°. In theory, this system works, periodically conducting what is known as a “passive regeneration.” The DEF fires through the filter, cleansing it, and allows the soot to be exhausted from the system safely.

Technology is certainly great when it works. However, whether it is your iPhone, flat-screen television, or a DPF system, that is not always the case. When a DPF system fails to conduct a passive regeneration, the driver is prompted to conduct an active regeneration. This typically results in the truck alerting its operator that he/she must press a button to cleanse the DPF with a dosing of DEF and diesel fuel. This action is costly, since diesel fuel is jettisoned from the fuel line directly into the DPF several times. Nobody likes to waste fuel this day in age.

Occasionally, no matter how well the system is set up, a manual/mechanical regeneration may need to be done. This is the worst-case scenario, because it spells downtime for the business. The truck must be off-road when the DPF is removed and professionally cleaned. Handfuls of niche businesses have been born from the DPF movement—those whose entire business model is traveling to a downed truck and conducting a manual cleaning. More money out of the fleet budget.

In steps Eric Wyson who, for the last two years, has been running a premium fuel blend through his bulk tanks and into his trucks. Wyson is a dedicated user of the multifunctional diesel product Optimum Performance Technology/Anti-Foulant, or OPT-AF, for short. Built around the most contemporary DW-10 detergent, the OPT-AF package is designed to protect DPF componentry from ever having to do an active or manual regeneration. Secondary and tertiary functions include protecting High-Pressure Common Rail injectors from gumming up, and removal of microscopic carbonaceous deposits known as asphaltenes. Unchecked, these particles can foul an injector and eventually destroy it—something that didn’t leave Eric Wyson feeling too warm and fuzzy.

“Since beginning the OPT-AF program, we’ve seen a huge difference in the DPFs on our trucks,” Eric tells me. “Recently, we sent out a DPF filter that came from a truck that had run about 230,000 miles. When the cleaning company baked the filter, they were able to remove a pound and a half of ash.”

Surprised, I asked him about that. He, too, was initially concerned with the finding.

“The guy said to me that he’d never taken that much out of a truck, and he was astonished that the truck had never had a single issue with regens. He told me ‘whatever you’re doing, keep doing it,’ and the truck’s unhindered performance ‘was a testament to the level of our fuel treatment program.’”

“We have to protect the fuel because it touches every ounce of my business, my investments, and the brand I’ve worked hard to establish. Not all fuel is created equal, that’s for sure.”

Eric is militant when it comes to his fuel treatment program. His bulk tanks on site in Gardner have a large sign beside them that reads: DO NOT FILL TANK WITHOUT ADDITIVE!!! Since beginning the program, he’s taken the time to educate his own staff/drivers about the importance of protecting his trucks from the inside out.

“Every minute a truck isn’t running is damaging to the bottom line and the brand. I’ve had trucks downed before, and it’s difficult because I’ve got my own customers counting on me to get a load where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. That’s important. We don’t have those problems anymore. MPG loss, shortened filter life, regen issues—none of it.”

Ask yourself: Are you ready to establish your own treatment program? Your brand might depend on it.

  • AFS Marine Additives
Built on the premise that all fuels are not created equally, AFS marine additives are here to ensure marinas fuel protects a boater from the waterborne elements that can interrupt the boating experience....

  • Preventing fuel related problems, such as those caused by ethanol and other noted fuel contaminants, are more important than ever. Most boaters, however, don't know that using a gasoline or diesel fuel specially formulated for marine engines can significantly reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs, extend marine engine life, and prevent ethanol and ultra-low sulfur diesel related problems.

Marine engines can use up to 10 times more fuel per hour than the engine in a car or truck because they operate at much higher RPMs and loads than automotive engines. The detergents and other additives in automotive-grade gasoline or truck-grade diesel fuel are typically not effective enough to keep a marine engine's fuel system clean of deposits. They also do not contain additives that help prevent premature wear.

Our AFS Marine Diesel Additive and Premium Marine Gas Additive are specially formulated for marine engines to keep injectors clean and maintain optimum performance. It removes and prevents the accumulation of deposits restoring and maintaining fuel economy and reducing emissions. It can help prevent the problems associated with ethanol blended gasoline, such as phase separation, moisture contamination, poor stability and the formation of power-reducing carbon deposits.

Our Slipstream™ marine marketing program intends to lead the industry in fuel quality, promising to boat owners, who pay a high price for gasoline and diesel that it will deliver on its performance claims and help lower the maintenance costs and downtime of their prized possessions.

Marinas up and downt he east coast, when adopting our Slipstream marketing program will be supported with signage; marketing materials and fuel quality testing programs to help distinguish their marina brand from the competition in pleasure, luxury boating and sport fishing communities.

  • Bioheat/Biodiesel
Over the past two and a half decades, AFS president Paul Nazzaro has helped position both biodiesel/ULSD blends and Bioheat®/ULSHO as two of the fastest growing alternative fuels in the nation....

  • Earlier in this EEE Virtual Expo, our President, Paul Nazzaro kicked off the business educational sessions with an important story titled:  "Transitioning Disruption into Opportunity" which deals with the importance of personal and business reinvention anticipating disruption in a marketplace.

Paul’s vanguard leadership proved critical in the formidable task of gaining acceptance of biodiesel by the heating oil industry. In addition to overseeing the National BIodiesel Board’s Bioheat consumer website, Paul has developed countless guides for every level of the supply chain, including the Bioheat® Playbook, Biodiesel Success Stories, and a Biodiesel fuel blending video that demonstrates proper blending technique at the terminal level. He has also developed and brought to market two branded soy-based additive packages.

In 2018, Paul organized the Exploring Biodiesel Regional Seminars (XBX), an intensive training workshop for liquid fuels supply chain participants, which drew more than 500 attendees in seven cities across the U.S. After an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees, he is currently in the planning stages for XBX 2020.

Most recently, on behalf of NBB, Paul introduced Bioheat® Plus (6-20% blends) and Bioheat® Super Plus to our industry partners.(20%+ blends).
