• Juras Joins Gannett Fleming Power Group (Feb 16, 2022)
  Please join me in welcoming Jim Juras, Gannett Fleming’s new Power Business Line director. Jim brings over three decades of experience to our team. To help you get to know Jim, we asked for his insights about his career and our industry.
  
  How did your career start and what led you to it?
  I got a job right out of college selling IBM PCs when they had first hit the market. While it was an exciting time to be in the computer business, I really wanted to work in software development and control systems. After a year of sales, I found an opportunity with a local electric utility. I was put in the SCADA/EMS group and got an introduction to real-time critical computing environments supporting both the transmission grid as well as their two power plants. That was my introduction to the power industry, and knowing that I have a small part in keeping the nation’s critical infrastructure operating has been a motivator throughout my career.
  
  What is your favorite way to unwind?
  My wife and I really enjoy the beaches and trails of Cape Cod. We do a lot of swimming, kayaking, biking, and harvesting clams and oysters when in season. We are blessed to have the opportunity to spend a lot of time in a place we both love.
  
  What’s something most people don’t know about you?
  I am an avid wood-turner and enjoy making intricate bowls and replica lighthouses. I invested in a lathe and turning tools, and love to spend my free time extracting bowls or other items out of large blocks of wood—all of which are sustainably harvested. Many of my ‘products’ have been made from trees that have fallen in friends’ or relatives’ yards. This allows me to preserve a lasting legacy of their trees in a new form.
  
  What projects or experiences stand out in your career?
  While working for an OEM for nearly 20 years, I had the opportunity to help automate many transmission control rooms throughout the nation. In the early part of my career, system map boards were largely designed by using colored tape on metallic wallboards, each color representing different line voltage levels. Today, control room operators face walls of video screens that show the electrical grid with dynamically updated system maps and real-time power flow information. Gone are the days of removing tape and re-applying it when system updates were made or applying sticky notes (or actual tags) to parts of the board to represent outages or special operating conditions. Today, operations personnel rely on knowing the instantaneous status of the grid which helps them to ensure reliability and resiliency. Seeing the transition to a digitally operated grid has been a very rewarding experience.
  
  In your opinion, what is the state of our industry?
  There has never been a better time to be in the power industry. The rate of change of new generation sources, expansion of integration of distributed energy, technological advances in grid design, and investment in the grid from non-traditional funding sources has this industry poised to continue to see expansion and opportunities for engineering firms well into the future. I’m excited to be a part of it and to see Gannett Fleming grow to be an industry leader.
