Joe Turner was appointed by Mayor Bill White in July 2004 as the Director of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. He served under Mayor Annise Parker and Mayor Sylvester Turner until he retired in April 2017. His many accomplishments include developing playgrounds without limits by installing them in various demographic areas with public transportation nearby to provide equitable access to parks and playgrounds. He created successful Public Private Partnership agreements to develop and renovate existing Parks and in 2008 under his direction the Department received the CAPRA Accreditation.
Today he serves on the New Braunfels Park Advisory Board, the Brackenridge Park Conservancy Board and the American Academy for Park & Recreation Administration. Joe is a member of the Texas Recreation and Park Society as well as the National Recreation and Park Association where he has served for 7 years on the Board. Currently, Joe resides in New Braunfels, TX and works with GameTime and Total Recreation Products to provide consulting services where he is able to utilize his business and parks management expertise.
