Advanced Analytical Techniques in the Study of Energy Storage Materials
Friday, March 12, 2021: 8:30 AM - 11:40 AM
Speaker(s)
Description
The transition to a low-carbon economy will require wide-scale integration of energy storage to power e-mobility and support integration of renewables. Analytical chemistry is central in understanding the composition and performance of energy storage materials. This symposium will cover operando techniques used to probe phenomena that impact a battery’s operation.

Presentations:
- Session Number: S04-01
- Friday, March 12, 8:30 AM - 9:05 AM
This presentation will deal with the development of new materials and operando methods for electrical energy storage (EES) with emphasis on battery materials and supercapacitor technologies. The presentation will begin with a brief overview of the methods employed. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of X-ray diffraction (XRD),...

The demand for improved batteries is driving research towards the development of new electrode and electrolyte materials. However, the search for optimised materials can sometimes fall short in our aim of developing improved batteries. This is because the improvement of individual battery components cannot, on their own, provide the step-change...

Lithium-Air batteries have been the spotlight on many circumstances over the last 5 years, sporadically showing as a potential break-through for energy storage devices. Despite their very-high energy density with up to a one-fold increase compared to Li-ion, industry and part of the scientific community remains sceptical over its practical...

Recent advances in the development and implementation of in situ/operando S/TEM techniques have resulted in new research opportunities, where it is now feasible to image dynamic chemical and electrochemical processes at high spatial resolution and under external stimuli. In this talk, I’ll demonstrate how in situ electrochemical S/TEM (ec-S/TEM) can...

The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) dictates the performance of most batteries, but the understanding of its chemistry and structure is limited by the lack of in situ experimental tools. In this presentation, we show a dynamic picture of the SEI formation in lithium-ion batteries using in situ liquid secondary ion mass...
