Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Sources of Human Exposure- How They Got There and How to Detect Them
Thursday, March 11, 2021: 8:30 AM - 11:40 AM
Speaker(s)
Description
Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become ubiquitous environmental contaminants. Due to their widespread use, resistance to degradation, and ability to bioaccumulate PFAS have been detected in both wildlife and humans. PFAS can be found in the environment (water, animals, plants), foods (from environmental contamination to unintentional contamination from processing and/or packaging), and commercial products (cookware, cleaners, paints), Robust and reliable methods are needed to detect many of the compounds classified as PFAS in a wide variety of products in order to adequately learn about potential routes of human and animal exposure. This symposium will look at the various methods used to detect PFAS in foods, cosmetics, packaging, and commercial products.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been produced for over 60 years for many consumer products and industrial processes. PFAS are the subject of increasingly intense environmental research because they are highly mobile in the environment, ubiquitous, bio-accumulative and associated with various adverse long-term health effects. For these reasons, the...

Groundwater in several Twin Cities communities has been contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for many years . While exposure to PFAS through drinking water had been assessed and addressed, the Minnesota Department of Health was concerned about other exposure routes, including the use of untreated water for garden...

The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) has a long history of investigating per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food (milk, fish and cranberries) and food packaging (popcorn bags and cookware) with results published in several peer-reviewed journals. Recently the US FDA has developed methods for total diet...
