Description

The FBI Laboratory research program seeks to cultivate and deliver new technologies and methods, improve existing processes, and strengthen the scientific foundations of forensic science in support of the FBI’s mission. In order for our research program to be successful, we must continually apply strategic thinking and invest our resources wisely. When research is undervalued and receives minimal resource allocations, the impact is a diminishment in our ability to remain relevant. In addition, our commitment to continual improvement through innovation is negatively affected. The FBI Laboratory’s Research Strategy utilizes the dedicated Research and Support Unit research scientists as the primary conduit for our research program. However, based on the diverse nature of the various disciplines within the FBI Laboratory as well as the limited number of dedicated research personnel, many of our case working unit staff must participate in and/or lead some research projects conducted within the Laboratory. In an era of dwindling budgets, the FBI Laboratory has had to seek out other opportunities to address identified research needs that cannot be conducted by our dedicated research staff or within our case working units. The Center for Advanced Research in Forensic Science (CARFS), provides us with an avenue for some of the identified research needs to be addressed without impacting either our dedicated research staff or our case working unit personnel. With a minimal investment to participate in CARFS, we have access to a robust team of researchers associated with the Center that can take on some of the research projects that otherwise might not be addressed internally.
