The Role of Climate Change and Carbon Dioxide on Medicinal Properties of Plants.
Wednesday, March 10, 2021: 2:40 PM - 3:15 PM
Plant chemistry is based on different environmental inputs, carbon as carbon dioxide is derived from the atmosphere; macro and micro elements (N, P, K, Fe, etc.) from the soil. The rapid and projected increase in atmospheric CO2 (~30% since the mid 1950s; 50% increase by end of century) is resulting in a elemental imbalance in plant biomass (stems, roots seed). Such an imbalance has ramifications for a number of plant derived materials, from food to medicine. Here, I will describe efforts to determine how recent and projected increases in CO2 have altered a number of important pharmacological sources, from artemesinin to atropine, from nicotine to morphine, the basis for the observed reductions, and future directions for additional research.
