Description
In this study, a triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS system equipped with an advanced electron ionization (AEI) source was evaluated against the method performance data published in EPA Method 1668C, the isotope dilution method for chlorinated biphenyl congeners in water, soil, sediment, biosolids, and tissue by HRGC/HRMS. Using a unique stationary phase optimized for PCB analysis, the TSQ 9000 AEI for data acquisition and commercially available standards, the system was able to meet the calibration linearity requirements of method 1668C with all standards analyzed at 1/5th the concentration outlined in the method. The chromatographic method was optimized using online computer modeling software to minimize isobaric interferences with the WHO list of toxic congeners and the NOAA congener list. Method performance was evaluated by determining method detection limits (MDLs) and minimum levels (MLs) as outlined in method 1668C and evaluating several SRM extracts, demonstrating enhanced sensitivity and adequate detector selectivity for detailed PCB congener analysis.
