A2LA and CA ELAP: Carving a Path Forward

In May 2020, the California State Water Resources Control Board voted to adopt new regulations to modernize the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP), which now falls under its jurisdiction. These new regulations, which took effect January 1, 2021, require environmental testing laboratories that test drinking water, wastewater, and hazardous waste to implement the 2016 TNI Standard minus 2 clauses related to proficiency testing and Technical Manager requirements. The 2016 TNI Standard is nationally recognized and covers a broad range of industry-specific requirements related to laboratory quality systems and multiple fields of testing. Implementation will ensure that data generated by participating laboratories is of the highest quality, ultimately benefiting the communities they serve. Attendees of this presentation will be provided with an overview of the changes to the California ELAP program and how this affects the participating laboratories, as well as discuss the participation of A2LA during the regulation proposal process, and how A2LA’s role as a Third Party Assessment (TPA) provider will help laboratories ensure their transition to the new regulations will be successful.
