Near-infrared (near-IR, NIR; 12,500-4000 cm-1; 800-2500 nm) spectroscopy is one of the most rapidly advancing analytical technique used in research laboratories and in practical applications. Mainly known as an analytical tool useful for quantitative analysis, NIR spectroscopy is essential in various other fields, e.g., NIR imaging techniques in biophotonics, medical...

This communication attempts to separate the wheat from the chaff regarding the bid of commercially available handheld near-infrared (NIR) spectrometers and will answer the question of whether this technique is already mature for realistic applications of a non-expert user community. Taking into account its chemical specificity and the simplicity of...

The main component of living bodies is water. Since the biochemical reactions take place within water, the influence of the reactions is likely to be transcribed to water. Therefore, we have been researching by focusing on the relationship between water structure and biological function and metabolic activity. In the NIR...

The combination of advances in mobile electronics (computing power, memory, displays, user interfaces, etc.) and photonics (detectors, coating technology, MEMS and MOEMS, etc.) now enables very small, and in some cases very low cost spectrometers. This is most evident in the region covered by silicon detectors (~400nm - ~1000nm), and...

Modern near-infrared analysis is approaching its 56th birthday, since Karl Norris and Joe Hart measured the “spectral absorbance curve for a thin layer of ground wheat for the 1.0- to 2.3-μ region, showing that the 1.94-μ band of water has a minimum of interference.” Since those early measurements, the application...
