Chemometrics and Big Data in Cultural Heritage
Friday, March 12, 2021: 8:30 AM - 11:40 AM
Speaker(s)
Description
This session will explore how heritage scientists have been using statistical and chemometric methods to successfully assess unique scientific measurements of culturally important materials. However, due to their unique and subtle histories, many of these materials are not represented in commercial data libraries. Speakers will show ways how statistical methods can explore these unique and large data sets.

The Preservation Research and Testing Division (PRTD) at the Library of Congress has recently been expanding its use of chemometric analysis tools to investigate and model paper-based testing materials under investigation for various projects. Specifically, PRTD coordinates two large analytical collections of naturally-aged books and samples: the historic Barrow Collection...

Characterisation of cultural heritage materials is often difficult due to their extreme variability related to unknown processes of manufacture, past conditions of storage and use, and numerous degradation processes. Large sample collections need to be systematically analysed to fully understand the distribution of variables that define properties of interest to...

Paper sounds like old technology to the average person, but it can be made in an amazing number of different ways that change its physical and chemical properties. Identifying the paper used in artwork may aid in dating of the object, determination of provenance, understanding artisan’s techniques and processes, and...

Hyperspectral imaging is an important analytical tool in a growing number of areas including cultural heritage, forensics, chemical sciences, remote sensing and standoff sensing. Often it is of interest to find minor signal within hyperspectral images for an analyte with a known spectrum i.e., a target. Targeted anomaly detection is...

The utilization of non-invasive imaging for preservation and analysis of a range of physical heritage materials, has become a common tool used in cultural heritage. Cultural objects are often fragile and unique, and analytics require a forensic-like approach to recreate the history of use, impact of environment, and provenance. Spectral...
