Evaluating Cannabis’ Impact on Driving: Research and Interpretative Challenges

  • Session Number: S28-02
Thursday, March 11, 2021: 9:05 AM - 9:40 AM

Speaker(s)

Author
Rebecca Hartman
Monroe County Office of the Medical Examiner

Description

Cannabis legalization is the subject of much debate, but the potential impact on road safety is not always the primary focus of the discussion. Despite being the most common non-alcohol drug involved in driving under the influence (DUI) cases, cannabis’ relative safety for human performance remains strongly contended. This presentation will examine recent research on the effects of cannabis on driving, including lane weave and divided attention. Complications with interpretation will also be discussed, exploring reasons why cannabis impairment is challenging to establish. The effect of blood sampling time will be addressed in the context of forensic toxicological analysis and the problems with instituting science-based per se thresholds.
