Description

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of hand sanitizer as a personal hygiene product has increased markedly. Because of the increase in demand for hand sanitizers, and the alcohols that comprise most of their volume, many companies are shifting to the production of ethanol and isopropanol to diversify their revenue streams. Because hand sanitizer is considered an over-the-counter pharmaceutical product, its chemistry- and the chemistry of its components- is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration to ensure potency and purity to ensure efficacy and safety. There are a variety of analytical techniques that are effective and approved for the evaluation of hand sanitizers and their ingredients. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is commonly used to separate and detect trace levels of volatile contaminants in ethanol and isopropanol, such as acetal, acetaldehyde, methanol, and benzene. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy is a quick and easy way to assess alcohol concentration, which is critical to ensuring the potency of the final product. UV-Vis spectroscopy can also be used as a non-specific test for impurities in ethanol, ensuring consumer safety. The FDA has also promulgated a GC/MS method for analysis of volatile analytes, similar to the GC-FID method, with the added benefit of higher sensitivity and mass-based definitive detection of trace impurities. In this presentation, we provide an overview of these analytical solutions that have become important, in recent times, to address changing market demands in response to Covid-19. We will also provide an overview of how non-traditional manufacturers, such as fuel ethanol distillers, industrial chemical manufacturers, and brewers and distillers of beverage alcohol, have adapted their business to involve the production of USP/FCC grade alcohols.
