  • According to PAHO/WHO survey on the continuity of essential health services during the COVID-19 pandemic (January-March 2021), out of 27 countries in the Americas, 60% reported interruptions in services to address mental health-related illnesses. To bridge this gap in care, many countries in the Region have implemented remote care services.

As part of PAHO's technical support to countries, a series of regional virtual sessions were organized earlier this year to equip MHPSS professionals with the necessary skills to provide remote psychological and psychosocial support in the context of the pandemic emergency. The need to create a collaborative space in which to continue learning and exchanging experiences arose in these sessions.

PAHO has launched community of practice, CoP, which started in July  2021 and run until the end of the year. The CoP will provide support and guidance on ways to implement the actions needed to strengthen emergency and disaster mental health response using remote methods, share knowledge and cultivate best practices.

  • The campaign invites healthcare workers to share testimonies about managing pandemic-induced stress, anxiety, and depression

Washington, D.C. October 8, 2021 (PAHO) On the eve of World Mental Health Day, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is launching a social media campaign to raise awareness of the sustained burden the COVID-19 pandemic poses on the mental health of frontline health workers, inviting them to share their stories and strategies to better manage and cope with this added challenge.

The campaign Mental Health Now – Tell Your Story, will collect written and video stories from healthcare workers in the Americas through Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, which will be compiled and disseminated through PAHO’s website and social media channels until the end of the year. The story selection will be based on specific criteria, aiming to portray the breadth of the effects of the pandemic and display the diversity of the Americas.

Preliminary data from the COVID-19 HEalth caRe wOrkErS (HEROES) study, a collaboration between the University of Chile, Columbia University in the United States, and PAHO, indicate that between 5% and 15% of respondents in several countries in the Americas reported suicidal thoughts in the two weeks prior to being consulted for the survey. Between 15% and 22% reported symptoms compatible with depression.

The study focuses on the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers in 11 countries in the Americas: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The study will be available in November.

The pandemic has affected the mental health of not only healthcare workers but also many other populations in the Americas, as they faced personal bereavement, news about illness and death, job losses, economic and social crises, domestic violence, school closures and persistent widespread misinformation.  At the same time, services to help people cope with such stressors have been disrupted by COVID-19.

Even before the pandemic, mental health services were not accessible to many in need. The treatment gap – the percentage of people who require care but do not receive it – for specific mental health and substance use problems reached almost 80% in some places in the Americas. Persons who are poor, unemployed, less educated, or are members of groups who often face racial and social discrimination, have less access to mental health services.

  • 2021 Annual Report of the Director of PAHO
The theme of the 2021 Annual Report of the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is: Working through the COVID‑19 Pandemic. Covering the period from July 2020 to June 2021.
    ...

  • The Director’s 2021 annual report on the work of the Pan American Health Organization, Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO), highlights the technical cooperation undertaken during the period from July 2020 to June 2021. The theme of the report is: Working through the COVID-19 Pandemic. The period has been the most challenging ever encountered by PAHO. The pandemic, through its devastating health and economic consequences, has severely impacted people’s lives and livelihoods and disrupted countries, societies, economies, and their development. The publication opens with a preface by the Director of PAHO, Dr. Carissa Etienne, a concise executive summary, and a brief introduction. It then presents a comprehensive review of PAHO’s technical cooperation. The report highlights achievements, challenges, and lessons learned as the Organization undertook technical cooperation with PAHO Member States at national, subregional, and regional levels within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Infodemiology. PAHO Journal of Public Health
The world is facing a major challenge as a highly infectious virus is spreading globally. At the same time, a deluge of information, including misleading or false content is spreading even faster through the social networks....

  • There is an increasing awareness that the surge of excessive, false or misleading information may pose new and serious threats to global health that should be adequately tackled through major research efforts and carefully targeted, evidence-based policy interventions.

Due to its consequences at the global scale and its analogies with the transmission mechanisms of a pandemic, the term “infodemic” is used to denote a rapid, large-scale dissemination of all kinds of health information and misinformation. This overabundance of information – some accurate and some not – makes it harder for people to find trustworthy sources and reliable guidance when needed. When an infodemic occurs during an epidemic, its potential threat for public health is significantly amplified and the effectiveness of the response and of public health measures may be jeopardized.

As a special contribution to this issue on infodemiology and a complement to the original articles, the PAHO Journal of Public Health also presents 7 articles (*) on public health misinformation originally published in the American Journal of Public Health. We thank the AJPH for their support.

  • COVID-19 Therapeutics Options
Ongoing Living Update of Potential COVID-19 Therapeutics Options:
Summary of Evidence. Rapid Review - 30 September 2021....

  • The vast amount of data generated by clinical studies of potential therapeutic options for COVID-19 presents important challenges. The new data must be interpreted quickly so that prescribers can make optimal treatment decisions with as little harm to patients as possible, and so that medicines manufacturers can scale up production rapidly and bolster their supply chains. Rapid interpretation of fresh data will save lives by ensuring that successful drugs can be administered to as many patients as possible as quickly as possible. This publication, the 27th edition of the database of evidence on potential therapeutic options for COVID-19, examines 147 therapeutic options. This information will help investigators, policymakers, and prescribers navigate the flood of relevant data to ensure that management of COVID-19, at both individual and population levels, is based on the best available knowledge. This resource will be continually updated as more research is released into the public space.

  • Regional Report on Alcohol and Health 2020
This regional report presents a comprehensive picture of alcohol consumption in the Region of the Americas, the related health and social consequences of harmful alcohol use, and how countries are responding....

  • This regional report discusses the impact of the harmful use of alcohol on population health and identifies evidence-based strategies to protect and promote the health and well-being of communities the Americas. The data have been validated by each country of origin for the WHO global report, and this regional report additionally includes subsequent studies that were not discussed in the earlier global report.

Alcohol-related harms have been neglected for too long in the Americas, while lives are being lost and individuals, families and communities continue to suffer the direct or indirect consequences. The harmful use of alcohol worsens the already large and growing social and economic disparities in our Region. It is clear that strong political commitment is needed to bring all sectors together, to ensure that health is placed ahead of commercial interests. Urgent action must be taken to prevent current and future generations from suffering the high health, economic and social costs of harmful alcohol consumption.

  • Older Adults in the Americas
Snapshot of Age-friendly cities and communities in the Americas during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons Learned...

  • kick off decadeMost COVID-19 related deaths in the Region of the Americas have occurred in people aged 70 years and over. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has further revealed the fragility of older adults, as well as of the health systems and communities that support them. However, age-friendly environments and related initiatives have played a key role in the timely adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of COVID-19. Various age-friendly cities and communities in Latin America participated in a survey aiming to understand the role of such initiatives in the Region, the impact of being part of the global network, and to present best practices adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • LGTB: The Story of Trans Women in Chile (Video)
Voices for Health Equity through action on Social Inequality: the story of collective organization by trans women in Chile.
    ...

  • Twenty years after the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, there has been progress in the circumstances affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. However, challenges persist, say experts at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The COVID-19 pandemic was catastrophic for this collective of trans women in Chile who engage in sex work for a living. Suddenly, they lost their means of survival and all income. Amanda Jofré, a trade union that defends the rights of trans people, and other organizations, helped them with food supplies and toiletries. The situation was even worse for migrant women because of added discrimination. Trans people are in a situation of extreme vulnerability in all Latin America. This is the story of how they organised themselves to help each other.
