The joint faculties of the School of Public Health at SDSU and The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UCSD offer a PhD in Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology, Health Behavior, or Global Health.  As a student in this program, you will complete course work and conduct research at both institutions. Faculty from each institution will serve on your advisory and dissertation committees, providing you with extensive exposure to experts with varied interests and proficiencies.  The program applies rigorous scientific methods to contemporary local and global health issues.

Graduates of the program are expected to have the following advanced skills: the ability to develop theoretical models for evaluating behavioral change in the population, qualitative and quantitative research methods, the ability to design and evaluate interventions to improve health behavior in underserved and vulnerable populations, and to advocate and promote change in health care policy.

The SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program is research-intensive, where students work closely with faculty members from both SDSU and UCSD in developing the skills necessary to become public health researchers and professional leaders in multiple settings.

Joint Doctoral Program graduates are competitive for a variety of research, teaching, and community service positions in areas such as academic institutions, local and state health departments, federal and international agencies, and both privately and publicly sponsored research organizations.
