• RTI International is Supporting NIH Initiative to Study ‘Long COVID’ (Oct 15, 2021)

  The RECOVER initiative will bring together tens of thousands of research participants across the United States in an effort to answer important questions about the long-term effects of COVID-19

  RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.— The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced a new initiative, Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER), to further understand post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV2 (PASC) – a term used to describe the longer term effects of infection with SARS-CoV-2, including persistent or relapsing symptoms which is often called ‘Long COVID’. RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, is serving as the Administrative Coordinating Center for RECOVER by supporting a series of strategic activities, with the goal of helping NIH to further understand the effects, treatment, and prevention of PASC, including Long COVID.

• Trend of Increased Alcohol Consumption Held Steady as Pandemic Dragged On, New Survey Results Show (Oct 15, 2021)

  Follow-up survey finds that in the U.S., Black people, women, and parents with young children had sustained increases in alcohol consumption amid pandemic

  RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — A second wave of results from a study conducted by RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, has found that increases in alcohol consumption observed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, including excessive consumption, were sustained through at least November 2020.

  Compared with February 2020, alcohol consumption in November 2020 was 39% higher, according to the new data, in terms of drinks per month. The first wave of the survey, conducted last year and sponsored by RTI, examined changes between February and April 2020 and revealed an increase of 36% in that timeframe.

• Understanding Black Youth Suicide: Steps Toward Prevention (Oct 15, 2021)

  To understand the how and why of rising rates of Black youth suicide, researchers call for a “Ground Zero” approach

  RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — While little research exists on how and why the rates of Black youth suicide are rising, research does show the rate of suicide in Black youth younger than 13 years of age is approximately two times higher compared to white peers. From 2009 to 2019, the percentages of Black youth who considered suicide, made a suicide plan and attempted suicide all increased.

  In a statement published in JAMA Pediatrics, researchers at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and RTI International responded to a call from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) requesting information on how to prevent Black youth suicide. The researchers emphasize the need for research and action on suicide prevention among Black youth to start from the ground up.

• In California, People Have Transitioned from Injecting Heroin to Smoking Fentanyl, Study Suggests (Oct 15, 2021)

  A study of people in San Francisco reveals a precipitous drop in number of injections, which could reduce infectious disease risk

  RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — A new study by researchers at RTI International, the University of California San Diego, and the University of Southern California suggests that people in California who use drugs are injecting heroin less frequently, preferring to smoke fentanyl instead.

  The two-year observational study of 395 people in San Francisco assessed changes in injection frequency, opioid injection frequency, and fentanyl smoking frequency in four, six-month periods. The median number of monthly injections was 17 in a six-month span from January to June 2020—a steep decline from the median of 92 monthly injections reported from July to December 2018.

• New Rule is Another Advancement in the Effort to Reduce Early Childhood Lead Exposure (Oct 15, 2021)

  Findings from RTI’s Clean Water for Carolina Kids program pointed to the need for a revision to lead standards for drinking water

  RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — A bill passed in North Carolina revises the definition of a “lead poisoning hazard” from 15 to 10 parts per billion and updates the state’s childhood lead poisoning prevention law, which is designed to ensure that young children and pregnant women are better protected from the risks of lead exposure. The revision comes in the wake of findings from RTI International’s Clean Water for Carolina Kids Program that stricter lead standards in drinking water would benefit children in North Carolina.

  Of the more than 3,000 centers that have participated in the program since June 2020, approximately 9% have one or more taps at or above 15 parts per billion, the prior lead hazard level. An additional 3.5% of centers had a tap at or above 10 parts per billion, but below 15 parts per billion, which under the old standards did not necessitate action to reduce lead levels.
