Since publishing Where There Is No Doctor almost 50 years ago, Hesperian has become the go-to source for trusted, accessible community health resources. Our print and digital materials are used by community health workers, Peace Corps volunteers, health educators, governments, non-profit organizations, and many others seeking to improve health around the world.

To ensure that our health information is easy-to-understand, actionable, and culturally appropriate, our ever-expanding global network of partners help to field-test our materials and provide valuable feedback to improve the content and accessibility of our resources. Many of our partners belong to grassroots organizations working to advance health and human rights in their communities and are key in the development and distribution of health information that is relevant and useful for the populations that together we serve.

We do this with fewer than 25 staff. More than 200 volunteers across the globe scale it up. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, you can support Hesperian by visiting our store and loading up your shopping cart!

We believe that the sharing of knowledge is powerful, and we work to create health materials that empower individuals and communities to take action for better health.

Our resources include:

  • Books and booklets covering a wide range of topics such as: women’s health, disability, diabetes, eye health, environmental health, workers’ health and safety, health worker training, community organizing and health advocacy.
  • Online resources:
    • The Hesperian HealthWiki: a feature on our website which allows visitors to ask access our trusted health information, including our COVID-19 fact sheets. The HealthWiki is free for anyone to use, and electronic versions of many of our books are available for free download or to read online.
    • The New Where There Is No Doctor project: an ever-growing selection of comprehensive chapters with topics ranging from diabetes to malaria.
  • Mobile apps:  the Family Planning, Safe Pregnancy & Birth, and Safe Abortion apps. These free, private, multilingual apps provide clear, comprehensive, actionable, and accessible information that can be accessed offline once downloaded.
