Pharmacy Residency Program

Trinity Health Oakland (THO) is a 497-bed community teaching hospital located in Pontiac, MI. In 2018, THO was certified by the Joint Commission as the country's first Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center and is home to the Michigan Stroke Network. THO is a Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital for cardiovascular surgery outcomes, as well as a Level II Trauma center.

Pharmacy Services

Pharmacy services at THO include a vast array of clinically focused inpatient pharmacy services, including, but not limited to, regular attendance at multidisciplinary rounds, management of drug therapy, and autonomous pharmacy dosing services. Additionally, pharmacy services extend into the ambulatory practice environment with one satellite pharmacy in our outpatient infusion center, a community pharmacy, and pharmacist managed anticoagulation services and diabetes education clinics.

Residency Program Vision

The THO Pharmacy Residency program is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The residency experience is an exemplary program for training clinical pharmacy practitioners in health system practice, as well as preparing them for a clinical pharmacy specialty. The residency training program, in conjunction with department leadership and staff, is highly regarded for contributions to outstanding pharmaceutical care through innovative training and practice.

Residency Program Purpose

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

PGY1 pharmacy residents are provided the opportunity to accelerate their experience beyond an entry-level pharmacist. They gain professional competence in patient-centered care and pharmacy operational services. They develop leadership skills that can be applied to any pharmacist position in any practice setting. There are four required educational and practice experiences in which the resident must receive instructions and competency:

  1. Patient Care
  2. Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care
  3. Leadership and Management
  4. Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge
