  • SciAps is excited to announce our

    2021 Semester Academic Loaner Contest!

    Please review the guidelines below:

Students, professors, and researchers are all invited to share their research ideas and briefly describe how they would use our XRF or LIBS analyzers to benefit your Geochem education or those around you. LIBS is often a preferred technique, especially for students since operators do not have to deal with the regulatory complexities of X-ray fluorescence analyzers. SciAps Z-300 will measure every element in the periodic table – yes even hydrogen! And our accompanying ProfileBuilder software provides operators complete freedom to modify laser and spectrometer parameters and generate their own calibrations. You are not limited to factory-imposed calibrations or unchangeable multi-variant techniques. SciAps X-200 is a premium handheld XRF, perfect for both in the field or in the lab when measuring MG - U.

Submissions should be emailed to academic@sciaps.com. The top 3 research ideas will WIN a semester (around 15 weeks) use of their choice of XRF or LIBS analyzer. As your work progresses, we would appreciate continued updates. Don’t worry, we understand that you can’t compromise a future publication. We will get you the analyzer, train you at a regularly scheduled time (often via GoTo Meeting or Skype but in-person works too).  The analyzer of your choosing can be used as a teaching tool or turn the work into a publication or poster and SciAps will even help promote your project online.

SciAps mission is to raise awareness of the amazing world of applications available to handheld LIBS.

Please submit ideas by December 19th, 2020. Winners will be chosen Jan 1st, 2021.

Please note at this time we must limit this contest to researchers working at U.S. and Canadian institutions. However, researchers from these countries may travel globally with the analyzer.

Measuring Lead in Tap Water with Handheld XRFthrough research and multiple trials, Lieberman and her graduate student Meghanne Tighe created a method to test lead in water using a two-liter bottle and a special carbon filter that collects the lead as the water passes through it. The remaining difficulty was in finding a better way to test those samples for lead. Lieberman had been using the handheld SciAps XRF for other research projects and tried it on the samples.

Soil nutrient detection for precision agriculture with handheld LIBS - A new study using SciAps Z-300 LIBS shows handheld laser induced breakdown spectroscopy to be a promising sensor technique for the in-field determination of various soil parameters. The key to this new approach is moving LIBS out of the lab and to the work site. Read our interview with one of the German researchers advancing agricultural analysis.

Have LIBS, will travel - Meet Dr. Richard Hark, synthetic organic chemist, conservation scientist and LIBS enthusiast! Hark recently completed a project using solely SciAps instruments—XRF, Raman and LIBS—for JR Plumer Associates, LLC, performing soil analysis in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in New Hampshire.

Measuring Elements in Tea with Handheld LIBSDr. Ying Guo, Dr. Seungjin Lee and Dr. Tae Lee from Georgia Gwinnett College began a unique elemental analysis using the SciAps Z-300 handheld LIBS: They tested five popular tea brands to quantitatively determine the amount of both beneficial and contaminant elements in tea commonly available in supermarkets.

  • The BEST XRF and LIBS analyzers EVER made.
TWO complimentary technologies to meet all your geochemical needs, the Z-Series and X-550 analyzers. See what others can’t. Analyze any mineral, any element, Anyplace on the planet....

  • Meet the Z-300  the world’s only handheld that analyzes lithium in soils, ores and brines.

The Z also measures other low atomic number elements that X-ray can’t, including Be, B, C, F, Na, plus the many transition and heavy metals that X-ray also measures. The Z uses the technique of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). LIBS is an optical technique and is therefore very sensitive to the low atomic number elements. No X-rays means no travel restrictions or licensing headaches. There are now dozens of Z-300 analyzers being used globally for lithium exploration projects. If you need to measure lithium or other low atomic elements in the field, the Z-300 is your solution.

Element Pro: Need to know what elements are present on your sample without performing a complicated digestion and lab analysis? Element Pro performs super quick tests (< 3 seconds) to give a full qualitative analysis of all elements detectable in the sample including light elements like Li, Be, B, C, F.

Geochem: Use our factory-built calibrations or build your own matrix-matched calibrations for quantitative analysis of prepared samples. See how it’s been done for Total Organic Carbon in Soil and Lithium in Brines.

Geochem Pro: Take advantage of the 100 um analysis spot and XY raster capabilities to build element distribution maps of your sample in less than 1 minute per analysis. These maps allow you to quickly and easily visualize the changes in chemistry around veins, inclusions and mineral boundaries. See how elemental deportment mapping with Geochem Pro revealed Where’s the Gold.

Meet the X-550 process more samples than ever with this field portable XRF.

The SciAps X-550 sets a new performance standard for handheld XRF. Weighing 2.8 lbs. (1.3 kg) with the battery, it’s the lightest, fastest, most articulate X-ray gun ever made. It delivers the small size, blazing speed and high precision of the SciAps X Series in a perfectly balanced device. It’s fast on all alloys, including aluminums. The X-550 uses the industry’s most powerful X-ray tube, operating up to 3x the power in the Beam 2 setting compared to the SciAps X-505 and other handheld XRF analyzers. The unique geometry and tube power optimize performance for low atomic number measurement applications including sulfidic corrosion (low Si), phosphorus and sulfur, and aluminum alloys, as well as for residuals analysis per API 751 and 5L specifications.

Mining: Designed for bulk analysis of all kinds of geological materials, the Mining app utilizes an advanced algorithm to correct for matrix effects and provide the most accurate results possible. With optimized internal geometry, a high powered X-ray tube and the most sensitive silicon drift detector, this app will provide results with excellent precision for elements as light as Mg, Al and Si. Users can further fine tune their results by utilizing the Derivative and Site Cal features which allow for simple, site specific calibration corrections. Talk to us about our 50 kV option for improved performance on REEs and gold pathfinders.

Soil: The Soil app uses three different tube conditions to achieve the highest level of sensitivity for elements P–U.  The Soil app is calibrated primarily for low-density matrix types like soil, but can be applied on all kinds of materials including rocks, pulps and even liquids. Ideal for environmental testing and screening of things like RCRA metals and other hazardous elements.
