    2021 Semester Academic Loaner Contest!

    Please review the guidelines below:

    Students, professors, and researchers are all invited to share their research ideas and briefly describe how they would use our XRF or LIBS analyzers to benefit your Geochem education or those around you. LIBS is often a preferred technique, especially for students since operators do not have to deal with the regulatory complexities of X-ray fluorescence analyzers. SciAps Z-300 will measure every element in the periodic table – yes even hydrogen! And our accompanying ProfileBuilder software provides operators complete freedom to modify laser and spectrometer parameters and generate their own calibrations. You are not limited to factory-imposed calibrations or unchangeable multi-variant techniques. SciAps X-200 is a premium handheld XRF, perfect for both in the field or in the lab when measuring MG - U. 

    Submissions should be emailed to The top 3 research ideas will WIN a semester (around 15 weeks) use of their choice of XRF or LIBS analyzer. As your work progresses, we would appreciate continued updates. Don’t worry, we understand that you can’t compromise a future publication. We will get you the analyzer, train you at a regularly scheduled time (often via GoTo Meeting or Skype but in-person works too).  The analyzer of your choosing can be used as a teaching tool or turn the work into a publication or poster and SciAps will even help promote your project online.

    SciAps mission is to raise awareness of the amazing world of applications available to handheld LIBS.

    Please note at this time we must limit this contest to researchers working at U.S. and Canadian institutions. However, researchers from these countries may travel globally with the analyzer.

    Measuring Lead in Tap Water with Handheld XRFthrough research and multiple trials, Lieberman and her graduate student Meghanne Tighe created a method to test lead in water using a two-liter bottle and a special carbon filter that collects the lead as the water passes through it. The remaining difficulty was in finding a better way to test those samples for lead. Lieberman had been using the handheld SciAps XRF for other research projects and tried it on the samples.

    Soil nutrient detection for precision agriculture with handheld LIBS - A new study using SciAps Z-300 LIBS shows handheld laser induced breakdown spectroscopy to be a promising sensor technique for the in-field determination of various soil parameters.     Have LIBS, will travel - Meet Dr. Richard Hark, synthetic organic chemist, conservation scientist and LIBS enthusiast! Hark recently completed a project using solely SciAps instruments—XRF, Raman and LIBS—for JR Plumer Associates, LLC, performing soil analysis in conjunction with the Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in New Hampshire.

    Measuring Elements in Tea with Handheld LIBSDr. Ying Guo, Dr. Seungjin Lee and Dr. Tae Lee from Georgia Gwinnett College began a unique elemental analysis using the SciAps Z-300 handheld LIBS: They tested five popular tea brands to quantitatively determine the amount of both beneficial and contaminant elements in tea commonly available in supermarkets.
