The department offers three programs of graduate study, including a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and two Masters Degrees -- all with opportunities for research in a wide variety of specialty areas. SD Mines offers the only Paleontology Masters Degree in the nation. Our graduates leave well prepared for careers in industry, academia, applied research, or employment with state and federal agencies.
Geology and Geological Engineering faculty conduct research in these main areas: Energy and Mineral Resources, Geomechanics, Geophysics, Groundwater and Environment, Paleontology, Petrology and Mineralogy, and Structure and Tectonics.
Prospective students are encouraged to contact specific faculty members regarding research interests prior to applying for admission. Assistantships and fellowships are available and support is based on academic performance and/or financial need.
