Discover the newest ICOS Network compliant
Acoem Spectronus™ greenhouse gas & isotope analyser
    at AGU Fall Meeting 2022

Chicago, Il., USA, 12 December 2022

Acoem Global Scientific & LIDAR Specialist, Jošt Lavrič, PhD will be on hand at AGU 2022 at booth #1650 to provide expert advice and consultation regarding the next generation Spectronus™ — the only instrument to be labelled ICOS network compliant for all mandatory ICOS gases.

Meeting the needs of the research community, EPAs & industries with a single holistic solution

The original Spectronus —developed by Dr David Griffith, Senior Professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry and his team at University of Wollongong, Australia over a period of two decades— has until relatively recently been predominantly utilized in research applications with precision values for gas measurement exceeding World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards.

With increased awareness of the harmful impact they have on the environment and the potential future of our planet, there is a growing need for continuous monitoring of greenhouse gasses.

To cater for more diverse markets and put accurate greenhouse gas and isotope measurements within everyone’s reach, Acoem has developed a new, rack mountable version of Spectronus, which is more flexible and user friendly.

Already commissioned on projects in Australia and China, the next generation Spectronus is meeting environmental agencies and key industries’ demand for a stand-alone analyzer that can be used for high precision multi species greenhouse gas measurements.

Greater flexibility, mobility and ease of use

The next generation Spectronus, maintains all of the original instrument’s capabilities and functionality – accurately measuring:

    • Carbon dioxide (CO2) and its stable isotopes (δ13C and δ18O),
    • Methane (CH4),
    • Nitrous oxide (N2O), and
    • Carbon monoxide (CO).

The former housing unit has been replaced by two smaller and lighter-weight portable boxes that fit onto a 19-inch instrument rack. Various rack mount cabinet options can be ordered if the instrument needs to be self-contained or moved around on wheels.

While the previous Spectronus had a built-in cooling system, the new model does not require a cooler as a core component. Removing the cooler means that the Spectronus, while it can operate easily in a temperature-stabilized lab, is lighter in weight, quieter in operation, and requires less power to run. For operating the Spectronus in more challenging environments, an optional heater/cooler module is also available.

The evolved Spectronus intuitive interface includes a simplified optional overlay for the less expert user. This means a wider range of organizations can access valuable data without excessive training or upskilling. Enhanced instrument software makes it more reliable and fully compatible with Windows 10, plus language support allows non-English speakers to operate it with confidence. Simplified Chinese is currently available with additional languages to come.

“With one integrated software system, one set of calibrations, ease of operation and a competitive total cost of ownership, the next generation Spectronus is a game changer for those seeking to undertake measurements for compliance, policy decision making or research purposes,” said Jošt.

“We look forward to introducing the next generation Spectronus to participants and visitors at AGU 2022.”
