OUR STORY

About the YBRA

The Yellowstone Bighorn Research Association (YBRA) has a long history of facilitating geoscience education in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Set on the slopes of Mount Maurice above Red Lodge, Montana at 6,800 ft, the YBRA camp is at the base of the Beartooth Mountains where a breathtaking 69 mile stretch of the Beartooth Highway (US Route 212) seasonally connects Red Lodge to Cooke City, Montana and the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park. 

The YBRA is a non-profit organization that serves as a base camp for field course operations for colleges, universities and institutes. The YBRA sponsors professional and community-centered field trips and workshops. Our annual YBRA Open House features leaders in their field who discuss current issues in earth sciences and advances in related industries.

In 2024 we recognize our 88th anniversary! We invite you to discover the Yellowstone Bighorn Research Association, get involved, and join us in empowering future generations of geoscientists.

In 2023 the historic and distinctly western buildings that make up the YBRA campus were recognized for their significance when they were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Since our founding in 1936, we have played a vital role in the education of over 7,000 students. For many, this experience was transformative and critical to launching successful careers in government, academia, and the resource and environmental industries.

Annually, the YBRA hosts over 10 universities, a paleontological institute, and a variety of other groups totaling over 350 participants.
