OAI utilizes the photoacoustic effect to visualize and quantify optical contrast at up to several centimeters depth, at high spatial and temporal resolution.
In the context of PVD, the ability of OAI to visualize and quantify oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin concentration in tissue allows the measurement of perfusion, ischemia and oxidative metabolism, with a diagnostic workflow similar to conventional ultrasound.
