 Press Releases

  • SOMAG Launches Vibration Isolation Technology for Naval and Land-Based Sensor Systems

SOMAG AG Jena expands its proven vibration isolation technology to naval and land platforms. The Passive Vibration Isolation Ring (PaVIR), successfully used in aerial applications, is now available for pan-tilt cameras, EO/IR sensors, radar, and other mission-critical payloads operating on naval vessels and ground vehicles.
Vibration from engines, wave impacts, or rough terrain can degrade sensor performance or cause failure. PaVIR is a passive mechanical damping system that absorbs and isolates vibration using tailored combi-nations of rubber dampers, elastomers, and springs. Unlike active systems, it requires no power, no soft-ware, and no calibration.

    Benefits of PaVIR:

    • Prevents motion blur and image instability
    • Extends the lifespan of sensitive components
    • Resistant to corrosion, shock, and harsh field conditions
    • Fully customizable to your sensor’s weight, center of gravity, and mounting system
Applications include: surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting, and distance measurement using laser, GPS, ultrasound or interferometry.
  • SOMAG launched the GSM 5000, live from Intergeo. As the successor to the globally recognized GSM 4000, the GSM 5000 sets a new standard for aerial gyro stabilization mounts, offering unparalleled precision and stability for a wide range of airborne data acquisition applications. Building on the solid foundation of its predecessor, the GSM 5000 is designed to enhance the effectiveness of critical airborne missions, including terrain mapping, disaster management, agriculture, forestry, and urban planning. With the GSM 5000, users can achieve flawless image and data capture, even in the most challenging flight conditions, thanks to its superior ability to counteract aircraft movements and vibrations

Key Features of the GSM 5000:

    • Expanded Motion Range
    • 355° Drift Movement
    • Increased Usable Diameter
    • Enhanced Communication Interfaces
    • SD-card logging
    • optimized pivot point

  • Mapping Urban Heat with Precision with SOMAG’s GSM 5000

In May 2025, SOMAG AG Jena helped conducting a challenging thermal imaging mission over Phoenix, Arizona, as part of the IGI Lighthouse Project — a collaborative initiative to promote advanced 3D and thermal mapping in the US. The mission relied on our latest gyro stabilization platform, the GSM 5000 stabilizing IGI’s EcoMapper-1280 C thermal sensor. Other companies involved in the project were: ESRI, Fugro, Revolution Flight and InfraTec. Despite difficult flight conditions, the Gyro Mount delivered precise and stable results, showcasing its unique capabilities in real-world, high-stress environments.

GSM 5000: The Game Changer in Airborne Stabilization

Despite turbulence forcing aircraft speeds to increase beyond 180 knots in some sections, the GSM 5000 delivered rock-stable sensor alignment, ensure consistent data quality. Over 50% more flight time was required due to environmental factors, making stabilization even more critical.
The GSM 5000 retained full controll of the aircraft’s motion. This translates into higher operation reliability and image quality and dependable data evaluation.
