VR to Move Our Heart—Project to 3D Digital Archive Earthquake Remains | The Tohoku University Museum
The Tohoku University Museum’s project to digitally preserve the disaster remains of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake relied heavily on support from Elysium, whose InfiPoints software enabled the team to efficiently process and manage massive point cloud datasets under strict time and budget constraints. Led by Dr. Harumasa Kano, the project used laser scanning to record damaged sites before reconstruction erased them, but the cost and delay of outsourcing data pre‑processing threatened progress. InfiPoints allowed Dr. Kano and his team to quickly refine, analyze, and export large‑scale point cloud data themselves, making it usable for earthquake research, disaster‑prevention education, and immersive VR exhibitions with Canon’s MREAL system. Through Elysium’s technical enhancements—especially improved compatibility with VR displays—the archived data could be shared widely, helping transform the project from a research archive into a powerful tool for education, remembrance, and community healing.
