Cummins announces new keel cooled QSC8.3 light duty

    commercial rating for marine vessels

Columbus, Ind. - Global power leader Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) introduces a new rating for its QSC8.3 engine, expanding the keel cooled solution to 600 measured horsepower with an engine speed of 2800 rpm. This addition to the QSC8.3 power range means Cummins now offers 490 horsepower - 600 horsepower (365-447 kW) for both keel cooled and heat exchanger solutions.

Cummins is proud to be the first engine manufacturer to bring this power dense rating with a keel cooling option to market. This engine is designed specifically for fishing applications around the world where jet boats operate in shallow waters. The keel cooled system is much more efficient in these environments because the alternative heat exchanger cooled engines bring sea water through a pump which then encounter issues due to a build up debris from the water.

This keel cooled engine rating is highly anticipated by the 1800+ vessels that fish in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The remote location is only accessible by boat or plane and at times fisherman can be casting their nets in water as shallow as 4 feet. The QSC8.3 539 horsepower keel cooled rating is perfect for these conditions with the best power-to-weight ratio for its horsepower within Cummins’ offerings coming in at just 1875lbs (850kg).

“The Cummins marine team has in-depth knowledge of the complex remote regions and fisheries like those found in Alaska,” comments Mike Fourtner, Cummins Account Executive for Commercial Marine Sales, and keen commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay. “Our team is proud to bring to market this new power dense keel cooled rating, designed to benefit the fleets who fish in those shallow remote regions like the salmon fishery in Bristol Bay.”

The innovative use of a closed loop keel cooled system to manage engine temperatures eliminates sea water pump issues while offering a zero-discharge solution, providing a more environmentally conscious operation, by minimizing the possibility of contaminants entering the sea water.

This QSC8.3 keel cooled rating will be available in 2022 with a base warranty of two years or 3,000 hours. It is also backed by Cummins’ extensive network of over 9,000 service and dealer locations around the globe.
