Skipper Science aims to center communities in fisheries management by connecting fishermen and scientists in order to support resilient fisheries and build trust. The goal of the program is to provide tools and methodologies developed through the Indigenous Sentinels Network (ISN) to empower fishers to collect community-based monitoring data that contribute to sustainable fisheries management. Originating in Alaska, Skipper Science involves many public, private, and tribal organizations, and provides a secure community-owned online database and app for non-scientists in remote locations to systematically record environmental and biological data that they are observing in their communities. The program allows for a variety of data to be collected and provides honorariums to communities that participate. Fishermen receive training on how to collect data on environmental monitoring (weather, marine debris, water temp, etc.), fish and wildlife observations (fish, marine mammals, seabirds, etc), and vegetation (kelp) that can then be shared with managers upon agreement and permission from the community - helping fill data gaps.
