Opportune was born an enslaved woman in the North of Martinique, in 1791. Beautiful and rebellious, Opportune is a symbol of freedom and resilience.

The brand

We produce bold blends of white rums, aged rums, rums of different origins, pure cane juice rums and molasses rums, as long as it awakens new horizons to our gustatory and olfactory receptors.

Our rums are an invitation to travel. We wish to share the opportunity to discover the "lands of rum" and their history.

We invite you to discover a wide range of rums reflecting different traditions and countries, like the cachaça from Brazil or the Singles casks. Aged rums by the solera method, traditional French, English and Hispanic rums. Rums from Martinique (A.O.C), Barbados, Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Trinidad, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Venezuela, Guyana, Mauritius. And more are on the way.

• Featured in British GQ, Opportune 1791 Rums selected to represent France at VinExpo New York 2022 (Feb 26, 2022)

  After a successful launch in France and Switzerland, Opportune 1791TM Rums is proud to enter the US market, led by its participation at VinExpo 2022.  Opportune 1791TM is one of three rums selected to represent France at VinExpo New York, 2022 by the TEAM FRANCE EXPORT, operated by Business France and the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Martinique. 

  Opportune 1791TM is born of an authentic story. Rums pay homage to Opportune Bésub, born a slave in Martinique in 1791.  Anecdotes from her life are found on each bottle, with a message symbolizing freedom and resilience.  Founder, Philippe Madkaud is her direct descendent.  “When we found Opportune’s French citizen registration papers (upon emancipation), I was inspired by her life, her courage and her strength”.  Her story is one shared by many families in the Caribbean, US, Latin America and beyond. 

  Opportune 1791TM consists of a panel of 9 rums from six different countries, all with a shared history.  Each bottle represents an opportunity to explore milestones from Opportune’s life and historical events from her time. 

  Opportune 1791TM invites you to travel and discover the “lands of rum”.  We produce bold blends of white, aged, pure cane juice and molasses rums – all from different origins: Barbados, Brazil, Guatemala, Panama, Martinique, Nicaragua, and more to come.  

  Today at VinExpo New York 2022 we launch 4 amazing new Appelation d’Origine Contrôlée Rums (A.O.C) from Martinique: white, amber, VSOP and extra aged rums.  A.O.C, unique to Martinique, is produced by the fermentation of pure cane juice followed by distillation on Creole columns. The prestigious A.O.C. label and method -- similar to Champagne or Cognac-- gives our rums a distinctive aroma filled with subtle fruit bouquets aged in oak casks. This year Martinique celebrates its 25^thharvesting of AOC rums.
