The place where vines have been grown for centuries is now a space that shows what modern viticulture means: careful work with the soil and vineyards, the hand-picking of grapes and making wine with confidence. Sonberk, the first notes about this place are found in the 13th century, later on, the wine was served at royal courts. 21st century brings World successes for Pálava and Riesling at DWWA and the titles of Winery of the year 2020 of The Czech Republic.

    PÁLAVA

    • Czech native grape variety. A cross of Traminer and Müller ThurgauTraminer as a mother should give the new variety grace and deliciousness, an intoxicating aroma, and an irresistible taste.
    • Nationwide, Pálava covers just under 600 hectares of the total vineyard area (i.e. 3.3%), most of which is in the Czech Mikulov subregion.
    • The largest continuous planting of Pálava variety in one vineyard is 7 hectares - and you'll find it at Sonberk.
    •  When we pulled off a masterpiece with our Pálava, which even after five years remains the only one of its kind in the country. Pálava 2015 VOC won a platinum medal Best in Show and the title of Best Dry Aromatic White Wine in the World at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2017, out of a total of 17,000 samples.
    • This style of beautiful gestures, charm and know-how did not leave French restaurant owners, their chefs and sommeliers cold, and so the Sonberk Pálava found its way into many establishments, including Château Lafaurie Peyraguey, whose Lalique restaurant boasts a Michelin star.

So if you are interested in Pálava from Sonberk, don't hesitate to stock up - in the lighter "silver" version it reaches its full potential around three years after harvest, in the Grand Cru Sonberk the cellaring time is extended - in the case of straw wine, even to two decades.

 Press Releases

  • History & Background

Sonberk vineyards have entered viticultural history in the 13th century since when they have gained the reputation of giving excellent wines  - demanded by the Jagellon dynasty of Czech kings in Prague and by the Habsburg court of Maria Theresia in Vienna later on.

It is the land that stands first behind the success of the Sonberk vineyard; its terroir is defined by the altitude of 210–260 meters and by the South to Southwest exposition. The loess soil is rich of calcium, potassium, and minerals.

    Nowadays & International Achievements

The modern history of Sonberk – The best Czech winery 2013 and 2020 - starts in 2003 by funding a new winery with its Winehouse nestled within 45 hectares of vineyards. Today Sonberk wines are well known all over the Czech Republic and precious rewards arrive from abroad, too - such as DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS, VINALIES PARIS, MUNDUS VINI, TERRAVINO ISRAEL and international concourses in SAN FRANCISCO, QUEBEC, VIENNA, STRASBOURG and from MONDIAL BRUSSEL, 1000 Vins du Monde. Sonberk also attracts the attention of domestic and international press – The New York Times, Financial Times and Der Sonntag to name the recent coverage.

    Style & Effort

Being a young and modern winery dedicated to the production of high-quality wines Sonberk sticks to natural methods and manual harvest with a maximum of 1,5 kg of grapes per canopy. The annual production reaches 130 000 bottles of white wine in premier cru quality. The main varieties are Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and Pálava, a local variety with spicy tones.
