Valdemar Family is a wine group owned by one of the most symbolic families in Rioja, dating back to 1889. Defined by its pioneering character. We are a family winery with a background of over 130 years in the world of wine. The family's passion has always started from the same place: the land and own vineyard. Ana and Jesús Martínez Bujanda, 5th generation, manages the group, safeguarding the know-how handed down generation after generation and reaching new, innovative milestones distinguishing the family. Its origins are in the D.O.Ca. Rioja where Bodegas Valdemar is located. The 300 hectares of family vineyards allow the family to control each process, including the upmost care of the vine in search of the fruit’s authenticity, which translates into expressive and high-quality wines. Conde Valdemar, the flagship Rioja brand is distributed in 65 countries and awarded internationally in the most prestigious wine competitions and by top industry publications. In the spring of 2019, Valdemar Estates, the family’s new winery located in Walla Walla Valley opened its doors, becoming the first European winery with a presence in this US wine-growing region.

 Press Releases

  • Wineries for Climate Protection is the first and only specific certification for the wine industry in terms of environmental sustainability, and its objective is to become an international benchmark in the wine and environmental field, identifying solutions and best practices for wineries.

Several Spanish wineries are joining the Wineries for Climate Protection (WfCP) initiative, a relatively young movement, born in 2011, whose main purpose is to act in response to the new climate reality from the wine sector.

It became an official certification in 2015 and currently more than 30 wineries are certified. For the time that remains of 2022, 10 more wineries are expected to join.

At Bodegas Valdemar, as part of our commitment to respect for the environment and our dedication to sustainability, we are very proud to announce that we have obtained this prestigious certification that focuses on 4 basic pillars:

    • Reduce carbon footprint
    • Renewable energy and energy efficiency
    • Water management
    • Waste reduction

With this nationally and internationally recognised seal of approval, we want to show our responsibility and efforts in favour of the climate and sustainable development.

  • Bodegas Valdemar is excited to announce a new look for their Conde Valdemar portfolio of young wines. The updated packaging reflects the estate’s deep commitment to sustainable farming across the winery’s 300 hectares in Rioja and will launch with the 2021 vintage of the Conde Valdemar Tempranillo, Rosé, and Blanco. The new Conde Valdemar labels are colorful, lively, and elegant. Each feature one of the many indigenous flowers found growing among the vines in Rioja:

    • Conde Valdemar Rosé (SRP, $17.99) features the Malva Sylvestris flower, also known as Common Mallow

    • Conde Valdemar Blanco (SRP, $17.99) displays the Melilotus Indicus flower, commonly known as Indian or Yellow Sweet-Clover

    • Conde Valdemar Tempranillo (SRP, $17.99) shows the Centaurea Cyanus, commonly known as the cornflower

The type of ground cover emphasized on the new labels helps protect the environment by generating a diversity of colors and aromas through the abundance of flowers that naturally grow in the vineyards. In turn, the flora provides a large volume of pollen and nectar, acting as an alternative and inviting food source for the natural enemies of vine pests. “These new designs reflect our commitment to biodiversity in the vineyards, one of the most important aspects of our sustainable agenda and a cornerstone of our philosophy as a winery,” commented Ana Martínez Bujanda, Chief Operating Officer and fifth generation of Bodegas Valdemar in Rioja. “We believe that this new presentation for our young Conde Valdemar wines helps communicate this information while remaining true to our Rioja roots.” The new packaging was designed by Boxwood, the same firm that designed Valdemar Family’s new Walla Walla winery in Washington State, Valdemar Estates.

The labels for Conde Valdemar are meant to highlight the bodega’s overall efforts in sustainable farming and vineyard management. Under their biodiversity project, which has been in practice since 2015, the family has implemented:

    •  The use of organic matter to improve soil fertility
    •  A system of sexual confusion in the vineyard
    •  The establishment of floricultural plant covers in the vineyard
    •  A biodiversity of grape varieties
    • The use of non-productive areas without vineyards
    •  Vegetation reinforcements
    •  Creation of native woodland: bird nesting boxes, reptile shelters, animal drinking troughs, beehives, insect hotels, and more
    •  Biological corridors for animals to pass through
