Damen Marine Components (DMC) designs and manufactures a range of premium systems that are vital for the propulsion, manoeuvring and performance of vessels engaged in all types of maritime activity. These include short sea, deep sea, offshore, ocean-going, inland waterways, naval vessels and superyachts. Our primary products are nozzles, winches, controls, steering and rudder systems. The last two categories being sold under the Van der Velden trademark. We work closely with ship building and repair yards, naval architects and distributors of maritime equipment around the world, as well as supplying Damen’s global network of shipyards.

With over 150 years of experience, DMC has established a reputation for producing products that are advanced, have a high quality and reliability, due to its in-house engineering capabilities and continuous feedback from customers, third-party naval architects and maritime research institutes. While offering a comprehensive range of standard solutions within each product class, we also work with our clients to provide customised and semi-customised solutions to meet specific requirements. The high-profile DMC engineering team with its German, Dutch and Romanian naval architects is focused on providing optimal manoeuvrability designs for every type of vessel, compliant with any class society.

In addition to a global sales network ready to work with customers to help them find the optimal solutions for their vessels, we also offer a 24/7 worldwide support network to ensure that our products deliver maximum performance and minimal downtime.

  • The BARKE® flap rudder is the solution for any vessel with high manoeuvring requirements combined with proven fuel savings.

With its progressively rotating flap, the BARKE® rudder generates high lift forces at large rudder angles and low drag (resistance) at small rudder angles.

The enclosed linkage system of the BARKE® rudder provides overload protection and eliminates the entry risk of sand, ice and floating objects. These are ideal characteristics for fishing and research vessels, and dredgers.

    ADVANTAGES

    • Excellent manoeuvring and course-keeping
    • Low noise and vibration levels
    • 45º rudder angle + 55º flap angle = total 100º
    • Long lifespan

    APPLICATION

    • Best suited to seagoing vessels in the medium-speed range.
  • COMMANDER™ Rotary Vane steering gear

  • The Van der Velden COMMANDER™ Rotary Vane steering system is ideal for all sea-going vessels as well as superyachts and naval vessels. The high-end design consists of an integrated tiller and cylinder, which generates an equal high torque in all possible steering angles. It is safe in operation because of only one rotating part. Relatively low maintenance.

This system is available for steering angles up to 65 degrees. The wide torque range of the rotary vane gives greater flexibility in choosing the rudder system. The integrated tiller and cylinder are part of the actuator. The actuator of the rotary vane is designed to take the full vertical load of the rudder and rudder stock, making a separate rudder carrier rudder redundant.

    ADVANTAGES

    • Compact design
    • An equal high torque in all steering angles
    • Wide rudder torque range
    • No on-site alignment required
    • Safe in operation

    APPLICATION

    • All vessels with a torque range from 45 up to 1600 kNm

  • BOSS™ is the brand for the monitoring product line of DMC Dynamics. Each application monitors one of the ship’s specific technical segments real time via a touchscreen display with integrated software.

Each product from this line can upload to the online BOSS™ platform and will provide insight into the condition of the system being monitored, using the vessel’s sensors. Data can be logged and transferred to the cloud to facilitate remote inspections, analyses and precautionary measures via smartphone or tablet by e.g. the vessel operator. DMC Service – when authorised – can check the monitored system(s) at any time to initiate maintenance or repairs.

    • BOSS™ Economiser (ECO)

Calculates the steering behaviour, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption per trip. It furthers the captain’s consciousness of sailing behaviour to advance fuel savings. Explicitly developed for inland waterways.

    • BOSS™ Oil Quality Monitoring (OQM)

Measures the oil condition of hydraulic systems, thus enabling the reliable anticipation of servicing and/or replacement.

    • BOSS™ Stern Force Measurement (SFM)

Measures lift and drag to calculate the best rudder angle, in order to avoid stall moments. Displaying the optimal rudder angle/rudder force ratio, it promotes course-keeping and fuel savings.

    • BOSS™ Alarm Monitoring System (AMS)

Continuously monitoring the status of all main systems, AMS – which is configurated to class and IMO requirements – is indispensable. The touchscreen panel allows a rapid response from the bridge or wheelhouse, promoting safer sailing.

    • BOSS™ Bearing Clearance Measurement System (BCM)

Through constant measuring of the neck and carrier bearing clearance between the rudder trunk and rudder stock, wear is noticed in a timely fashion. Predictive maintenance will prevent downtime and unforeseen costs and delays during scheduled inspections.

    • BOSS™ Data Log Function (DLF)

Automatic logging of the data from all the aforementioned BOSS™ applications is conditional for effective reporting and trend analysing. DLF delivers exactly what you want these other products to tell you. The fuel savings or carbon emissions per trip? Just one push of a button.

    • BOSS™ DMC Cloud Connect (DCC)

DCC is the appropriate instrument to access the logged data of all the BOSS™ tools. DCC links the logged monitoring with user platforms in the cloud, where data can be accessed at all times via an http link or VPN. It helps fleet owners and shipping companies to have better understanding of the monitored systems onboard.

  • Gearbox-driven towing winches

  • Towing winches are often used on tugboats assisting container ships and other cargo ships in ports and port terminals. The pulling and braking force, in combination with the transmission, determine the application of this type of winch. DMC’s towing winches, driven by gearboxes, are unique in use. This solution developed in-house ensures that the speed of the winch is automatically adjusted to the required pulling force. The variable speed allows the winch to always run at the highest possible speed. This eliminates the need to manually choose between two or three-speed models.

    AVAILABLE MODELS:

    • Type of cable: Synthetic towing wires (polypropylene, Dyneema®) or steel
    • Pulling force: Standard up to 35 tonnes, higher on request
    • Braking force: Standard up to 200 tonnes, higher on request
    • Drum configuration: Single, split or double
    • Drive: Hydraulic and electric

    OPTIONS FOR GEARBOX-DRIVEN TOWING WINCHES

    • Wire-spooling system
    • Mooring head on main shaft
    • Anchor chain lifter(s) on main shaft
    • Line force measurement during towing
    • Line length measurement
    • Control system

    ADVANTAGES

    • HAULING OR VEERING AT MAXIMUM SPEED
The DMC variable-speed drive is the most recent innovation in winch technology. This makes it possible to always haul or veer at the highest available line speed. The speed of the drive system automatically adjusts itself in relation to the required line force.
    • ROBUST DESIGN WITH DURABLE MATERIALS
The design of our gearbox-driven towing winches is simple but effective as well as low in maintenance. We are able to achieve this by limiting the number of parts, making critical parts robust, using stainless steel and opting for high-quality rotating parts. In addition, the number of rotating points, levers and lubrication points are kept to a minimum.
    • QUIET, COMPACT GEARBOX
Towing winches from DMC are equipped with high-quality drives. The gears have been calculated for service life and strength according to the ISO 6336 standard. The high quality of the alloy-steel toothing ensures very smooth and quiet running, which extends its service life.
    • CERTAINTY THROUGH CERTIFICATION
All our winches are by default certified by Bureau Veritas. In addition to the verification of the specifications in advance, they are tested in our factories up to and in excess of the maximum pulling and brake-holding force, in the presence of a class surveyor. This provides our customers certainty in the winch performance and avoids loss of time during installation, commissioning and sea trials.
    • CRITICAL PARTS – for which the market offers no suitable solution – are developed, tested and produced in-house by DMC. These include brake cylinders, clutch cylinders and rotary joints.
