The Great Lakes Maritime Academy is more than a college experience. As the state maritime academy of Michigan, our college educates and trains the finest deck and engineering officers available to the commercial shipping industry. Maritime cadets earn a Bachelor of Science in Maritime Technology while completing essential sea time aboard the Training Ship State of Michigan and up to 300 days aboard the commercial vessels of the Great Lakes and oceans. Deck graduates are licensed Third Mate Oceans, First Class Great Pilot, Unlimited Tonnage while Engineering graduates are licensed Unlimited Horsepower, Steam and Diesel Propulsion. Great Lakes Maritime Academy, a Division of Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, has successfully prepared cadets to enter the United States Merchant Marine as an Unlimited Officer since 1969. College should be more than attending classes. We search nationwide for those students with a great attitude, work ethic and academic record. Our college offers the finest faculty, staff and training facilities available in maritime education, yet our greatest asset will always be our maritime cadets.
