The Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) Platform and Infrastructure Acquisition Division (PIAD) provides an array of technical support and engineering services to OMAO and NOAA. The division is responsible for engineering, design, construction oversight, acquisitions, including major systems acquisition.  In addition the staff keeps abreast of the ever-changing ship, electronics and sonar technologies.  PIAD also directs research vessel acquisition programs, develops upgrade and modernization plans, and fleet recapitilizations efforts. 

As part of NOAA, the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) operates the largest fleet of federal research ships in the nation. The ships are manned by a blend of civilians mariners and officers of the NOAA Corps.
