Gilbert Associates, Inc. is a full-service naval architecture and marine engineering design office. Founded in 1964, the firm has performed hundreds of design, conversion, and consulting contracts for ship owners of all types. We continue to offer a wide range of services to the marine community today, including design, consulting, and regulatory approval work. Our vessel design portfolio includes passenger vessels, tow boats, tugs, barges, research vessels, and other workboats.  We continue to find new and better ways to serve our clients through a blend of creativity and technical ability while drawing on the experience and expertise of many decades immersed in the industry.  The firm has claim to 35 passenger/vehicle ferries or passenger ferries built to its designs, ranging in size from 50 feet to over 300 feet.  We are also helping to move America’s resources with an extensive fleet of both retractable and conventional tow boats ranging from 80 ft to 190 ft in length. Gilbert Associates’ experience and ability in the design of passenger vehicle ferries, tow boats, and other work boats is evident by the number of vessels built over the years and is highlighted by the construction of sister vessels - a clear indication of designs that not only met the intended specifications but, in many cases, exceeded them.  Gilbert Associates stands as it always has by its designs with the customers’ interests always first.   We employ a straight-forward honest approach to ship design and take great pride in our vessels and the loyalty that we have from our customers.  We invite you to browse our web site to learn more about our firm's history, past and current projects, and services offered.

 Products

  • Design
Our vessel design portfolio includes passenger vessels, tow boats, tugs, barges, research vessels, and other workboats....

  • Each vessel has its own unique priorities and tasks.  Our approach to a boat's design is from a well-practiced program of communication protocols and design standards, which result in a design that not only meets the needs of the Owner, but enhances them as well.

Through well-developed management skills, we endeavor to make a project flow smoothly from preliminary design, through regulatory review, trials, and onward to final delivery.

  • Consulting
Our consulting services include speed/power analysis, stability analysis, and mid-life refurbishments. We continue to find new and better ways to serve our clients by blending creativity and technical ability with our experience and expertise....

  • Consulting Projects form a significant part of Gilbert Associates history.  These projects often vary in scope and scale once the vessel begins its working life.

From the experience garnered while engineering these consulting projects, we have also improved our own designs. Our experience in this field allows our staff to foresee needed changes well before work is started, so that projects remain on time and within their budgets.

Adapting a physical change or modification to a vessel, bringing a vessel into compliance with regulatory bodies, and meeting the needs of the customer, while maintaining the project's budgets, are all challenges Gilbert Associates meets with continued success.

Common examples of our services are listed below, although we are also able to diagnose problems and recommend solutions for all vessels:

    • Stability Tests, Deadweight Surveys and Stability Conditions Booklets
    • Speed and Power Analysis, Propeller Selection
    • Vessel Repowering

    • Midlife Retrofitting
