Johnson designs and manufactures a range of marine brake system products in house including hydraulic, pneumatic, spring-set or manually applied caliper disc brakes and brake systems for use on propulsion systems, hoists, conveyors, and other rotating power transmission equipment.  Johnson also produces electro-magnetic and electro-hydraulic thruster drum and disc brakes which are in service around the world on cranes, hoists and other material handling and power transmission equipment.  We have been designing and manufacturing Industrial Brake Systems Since 1915.

  • Disc Brakes - non magnetic
    Spring Applied hydraulically released caliper disc brake, made for the US Navy. These brakes are highly resistant to corrosion due to the aluminum bronze material used in their manufacturing....

    • This industrial marine grade brake is used by the US Navy for their mine sweeper vessels.
  • Caliper Disc Brakes - Pneumatic or Hydraulic
    We offer a comprehensive range of caliper disc brakes for propulsion shaft control or shaft locking for sailing vessels....

    • Standard Caliper Brakes are available in pneumatic, hydraulic, spring, and manually applied models, incorporating from one to three actuators in foot or side mounted configurations.  A free floating, self centering design, combined with a range of sensor and control options make Johnson caliper brakes ideal for any high torque, stopping, holding, or tensioning application.
  • Propulsion Shaft manual Lock Brakes
    A simple brake design for locking any propulsion shaft to prevent seal wear....

    • This propulsion shaft locking / holding system comes with a special split disc and hub arrangement and can be installed without dry-docking vessels.
  • Winch Brake Systems
    We offer extreme marine duty high torque brake systems for winches and hoists....

    • DS Series - Direct Acting Caliper Disc Brakes, fail safe / spring applied / hydraulically released or also available in hydraulically applied versions.  These brakes are used world-wide and including several US naval shipyards.  The Johnson brakes are unique due to removeable actuators and allow for ease of maintenance and less downtime.
