Exposure to UV and High Humidity Quickly Degrades Most Materials

UV energy causes direct molecular fracturing of plastic-based paints and structures. The following is a map of UV intensity of earth by European Space Agency.

While Zone 1 may be exposed to the most extreme UV intensity and high temperatures, temperature swings are relatively minor. Zone 2 experiences the strongest sun exposure and UV intensity. Zone 3 is exposed to high but not extreme UV intensity and relatively mild temperature. However, these areas must tolerate more temperature swings, which can cause paints and other materials to crack. Thus, the combined effect of moisture and UV may be even more damaging.

The ability of different types of plastic materials such as PVC (commonly known as vinyl), PET (polyester), acrylics (plexiglass), polycarbonates, wood (celluloid), or paints (mostly acrylic based) to withstand UV damage depends on their molecular structure. The molecular binding energies of the materials above are lower than UV and thus are more susceptible to degradation. Highly fluorinated plastics such as Teflon, PVDF, and their variations with higher fluorination have been proven scientifically and in practice to survive intensive UV exposure and provide protection for over 30 years. In addition, this tight molecular binding is also effective in blocking moisture, sulfur, nitric, and carbon-based acidic gases to provide additional protection.

Painted structures, graphics, and signs that utilize vinyl or PET laminates that are embedded with UV blocking elements typically last 6-12 years on vertical surfaces and less than 6 years on horizontal surfaces.

Painted, Laminated Signs and Structural Protection

Over time, the colors of sign facings will fade, reducing the contrast level between the legend and the background. The sheeting’s retro-reflective properties will also diminish, such that the sign can no longer be seen by drivers from an adequate distance.

New signs are manufactured to be more reflective and brighter than older versions. Still, they only last about 15 years, so municipalities constantly have to replace signs that reach their lifespan. For many states in the U.S., close to 400,000 to 600,000 signs are used and maintained. On average, these states would have to replace more than 30,000 signs if each one had a 15-year life span.

With average cost of replacement well above $250 per sign, FLUORSEAL® extends their life well beyond 50 years. This can save municipalities tens of millions of dollars.

Beyond the traffic and road sign that mostly use aluminum backing and structure that last to average of 15 years or less, the signs for tourists and attractions are even lesser protected and are typically faded and degraded in 3-12 years depending on the weather and UV zones that these structures and signed are erected. These signs are not only functional but also supposedly aesthetic and thus color fading is highly undesirable. With the ability of the FLUORSEAL® to extend the life well beyond 50 years, the costs of replacement and repairs can also be drastically reduced.

Even with a very thin coating of 10-20 micron thick, FLUOROSEAL® transparent UV protective coatings have been proven effective against high to extreme UV intensity and in blocking moisture and corrosive gases from damaging the aluminum signs and steel structures. The built-in molecular flexibility in the coating is engineered and proven to extend the life of the aluminum-based signs and steel structure in cold weather. Along with its resistant and ability to block UV penetration, FLUOROSEAL® coatings have been proven to provide effective protection even in extreme temperature swing in ZONE 2 and 3. In practice, FLUOROSEAL® coatings have been proven to perform as protective coating in outer space satellites where extreme cold to extreme hot applications.

FLUOROSEAL® transparent UV protective coatings are compatible with almost all acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, FEVE and PVDF-based paints and stains and can be applied directly in achieving the protections.

Cedar Wood Sidings and Wood Structural Signs Protection

Cedar sidings while naturally resistant to insects such as ants, termites, and mice, they must be properly maintained at all times to reach its maximum lifespan, with many planks needing to be replaced after just 10 to 15 years, and even well-maintained cedar siding may only last around 20 to 30 years in some climates. Re-siding your home can be a considerable expense, and needing to redo sections every 10 to 15 years and replace the entire facade every 20 years can be a serious drawback for many homeowners

Cedar even when properly stained and painted wood structures are highly susceptible to color degradation under rains and sun even in ZONE 3 weather. FLUOROSEAL® transparent UV protective coating from AIT with its high fluorination molecular structure have been proven to block UV, rain and moisture including salt spray to provide structural integrity and virgin wood and paint color beyond 50 years even under direct sun in ZONE 1 UV intensity and weather.

Even with a very thin coating of 10-20 micron thick, the built-in molecular flexibility engineered to extend the life of these wooded structure and signs in cold weather with high UV intensity have been proven to provide effective protection even in extreme temperature swing in ZONE 2.

Fluoroseal Benefits

Blocks Moisture and Corrosive Gases

FLUOROSEAL™ conformal coating SC7130-CC is an IPC-CC-830C, MIL and RTCA DO160 proven conformal coating. Unlike silicone-type conformal coating that allows moisture and corrosive gases to penetrate and deposit on the interfaces of the protected circuit boards and electronics, SC7130-CC is the world’s first fluoropolymer conformal coating that actually block penetration off their permeation and penetration.

"Parylene-Thin” Coating

This novel molecularly engineered conformal coating has been proven with by far the best permeation barrier in blocking off moisture, salt-fog, salt-spray and corrosive gases in protecting printed circuit board and fine-pitch components with <35µm coating.

Easy Application

Finished spray-dip-brush coating thickness of 30µm for effective sealing protection is the same as vacuum deposited Parylene type conformal coating. Yet, it has the coating flexibility for stress-free long-term and extreme temperatures protection.
