  • Through Hull Instrument Hoists
Instrument deployment hoists by OMS for cameras, sonar and security systems. Choose from vertical units, swing deployment units, or speak to us as we can work with any new or existing structure to deliver the best possible stable and accurate solution....

  • OMS Hoists for a through hull solution for sonar, underwater perimeter security and cameras.

OMS standard vertical designs can be used with an automated gate valve and sea chest arrangement. If required, the sea chest can provide access to the instrument head(s) whilst afloat making for easy exchange or maintenance works. These features save both time and money. We can manufacture deployment strokes of 1-4m and can allow for in-service speeds between 2 and 12 knots meaning faster and more accurate survey work. Low magnetic options are available on all designs.

Our solutions can be provided with PLC control system plus local and remote-control panels. The language and operational criteria are flexible to meet your requirements.

In addition to the vertical stroke, we can also offer full 360 degrees of rotation as well as a +/- tilt function on the application. Our systems will add value to your instrument asset.

OMS Swing deployment units are ideal for installations where the vertical room is limited. Designed to be installed as one module, the unit can be mounted to any flat section of the vessel's hull. The fabricated inner and outer boxes offer a compact design with an integral door mechanism allowing for a fair hull when retracted or deployed.

The length of the deployment leg can be adjusted for each application with the head mounting also allowing considerable adjustment for side scan mounting or an offset horizontal depending on hull form.

The swing solution can be supplied with our PLC control system including local and remote-control panels. The language and operational criteria are flexible to your requirements.

OMS offer a custom hoist solution and can work with any new or existing structure to deliver the best possible solution. Retrofitting to an existing foundation or working within a restricted envelope is also something we are always happy to discuss.

The units can be delivered with class approval and to MIL Spec standards as required.

We support all our installations with a worldwide network of service engineers and partners.

  • Thrusters - Retractable and Fixed
A complete range of bow and stern thrusters from OMS and Hundested Propeller. Our power ranges from 15kw to 2000+kw (20 - 2700 + hp) in both electric and hydraulic variants. Available as fixed tunnel units, vertical retracting and swing retracting units....

  • A complete range of bow and stern thrusters from OMS and Hundested Propeller. Our power ranges from 15kw to 2000+kw (20 - 2700 + hp) in both electric and hydraulic variants. Available as fixed tunnel units, vertical retracting and swing retracting units.

    Tunnel

Tunnel thrusters are compact and easy to fit units that can be supplied complete with steel, aluminium or composite tunnels, pre-drilled ready for installation.

The thruster hub units are protected by twin shaft seals on each propeller shaft and a single shaft seal on the vertical input shaft. The tunnel thruster uses high torque spiral bevel gears and twin contra-rotating propellers to develop a high thrust-to-tunnel diameter ratio.

Tunnel thrusters are supplied complete with a mounting saddle, all gaskets/ fasteners and a suitable interface for any hydraulic or electric motor. The motor is driven via a flexible coupling to reduce noise and vibration.

    Vertical

Vertical retracting thrusters benefit from the same in-hub technology as our tunnel thrusters, whilst allowing the thruster to fully retract leaving a fair hull with minimal drag. This compact design uses a lead screw lift assembly with a reduction gearbox to ensure that the thruster hub, when retracted, is held firmly in place.

The vertical thruster is also very useful where vessels have a deep V profile so the thruster is fitted higher providing a longer deployment stroke to clear the hull. They can also be fitted further forward or aft than a conventional tunnel thruster increasing the turning moment of the hull and therefore requiring less power input.

For added security, all vertical retracting thrusters can be manually raised or lowered in case of power failure. To ensure there is no environmental risk, the main drive motor, hydraulic hoses and electric cables are inside the vessel so are not open to seawater.

    Vertical Retracting and Rotating

Our vertical 360° rotating thrusters benefit from the same in-hub technology as the fixed tunnel thruster, whilst allowing the thruster to fully retract leaving a fair hull with minimal drag. This type of thruster has a very small footprint so is ideally suited to installation in aft or fore lockers where space is at a premium.

The vertical rotating thruster is also very useful where vessels have a deep V profile so the thruster is fitted higher providing a longer deployment stroke to clear the hull. They can also be fitted further forward or aft than a conventional tunnel thruster increasing the turning moment of the hull and therefore requiring less power input.

This type of thruster uses a vertical lead screw and guide rods to raise and lower the unit via a motor. As with the swing thruster, all motors and hoses are concealed within the vessel so are not in direct contact with seawater. We have worked with a number of boat builders to optimise the range offered. The rotation mechanism allows you to position the pod and provide 360 degrees of thrust.

The rotating thruster has also been installed and used as emergency propulsion.

    Swing

The swing thruster benefits from the same in-hub technology as the fixed tunnel thruster, whilst allowing the thruster to fully retract leaving a fair hull with minimal drag. These types of thrusters are usually used in applications where they are positioned within the accommodation area of a vessel. The low profile and compact design allow them to be easily fitted below floor bearers or in low level lockers, under beds or among other locations.

This compact design uses a lead screw lift assembly with a reduction gearbox to ensure that the thruster hub, when retracted is held firmly in place and cannot move. In addition, OMS swing thrusters feature a locking pin which adds additional security when locking the leg in the raised position. The main drive motor and hydraulic hoses or cables are fully enclosed within the upper leg assembly so are not open to seawater. We have worked with a number of boat builders to optimise the range offered.

  • Hundested Propeller gearboxes are made-to-order, which means that every gear is designed especially for the individual project. We have two main categories in our gearboxes, standard and custom and are available to discuss your requirements.

All Hundested gearboxes have built-in hydraulic servo for pitch control, eliminating the need for extra pitch control units. This, together with a long list of very useful options and the flexibility Hundested offers in the design and adaption to any needs, enables designers and engineers to create the perfect solution for the individual yacht. Even the location of the in and output shaft can be customised.  The most common setup is for the input shaft above the output shaft; however, it can be designed and built underneath or alongside also.

Hundested gearboxes have the possibility of up to three PTO/PTIs – all with individual clutches. On each PTO/PTI you can have a hydraulic pump or a generator/electric motor connected to the gear.

This generator can replace a normal diesel/auxiliary generator and at the same time function as a motor if ‘silent mode’ is required. The electric motor can even be used as a boost function if needed. This is a viable option and several vessels have managed to minimise the size of the diesel engine and on the few occasions when maximum power is needed the electrical motor will boost the diesel engine. Together with Hundested’s newly developed clutch for the input shaft of the gearbox, full flexibility in hybrid propulsion is achieved – running fully electrical, diesel or both.

The gearbox reduction ratio is determined by the specific application. The gears range in reduction ratio and are available in single reduction or double reduction. The single reduction range is from 2,030 to 6,580. The double reduction range is from 6,050 to 12,600. We manufacture propeller shafts in one piece in lengths up to 12m.

  • Propellers - Controllable Pitch Propellers

The diameter of the propellers ranges from approx. 750 mm up to 4000 mm and we manufacture propeller shafts in one piece in lengths up to 12m.

    Made to order products

We are a made to order business which means that every system is designed especially for the individual project. We have no “standard” system that we pick of the shelf. We deliver complete CP propulsion systems for nearly all types of vessels: Fishing boats, tugs, ferries, coasters, smaller tankers and pleasure boats. We can supply everything from the engine and aft: CP gearbox or pitch control unit, flexible coupling, PTO’s, mechanical or electronic remote-control system, intermediate and propeller shaft in carbon or stainless steel, stern tube with your choice of lubrication system, CP propeller with standard or specially designed skewed propeller blades and thrust nozzle.

    VP and MP Propellers

The propeller blades are as standard mounted in a traditional split propeller hub. This is the VP system. But can also (for the larger sizes) be delivered in a bolted-on version. We call this version MP for Multi Pitch. There are several great advantages of the MP version:

    • It is possible to replace one blade without disassembly of the entire propeller hub.
    • The good sealing system between the hub and blades means that the risk of contamination to the sea is minimal.
    • Grease lubrication is only necessary every 5 years.

Our propellers have a simple but sturdy design with only mechanical parts in the propeller hub. Our design with grease filled hubs enables a design without any critical seals and thus avoids leakages. We are a leading manufacturer of CP propulsion systems for larger sailing yachts which require feathering propellers for minimum drag when under sail.

The Advantages of Controllable Pitch Propellers

    • A fixed propeller, designed for maximum speed, cannot give maximum power at low speed, while a fixed propeller designed for power, cannot achieve maximum speed.
    • With a controllable pitch propeller, it is always possible to obtain full utilization of the engine, irrespective of the purpose of the vessel.
    • Maximum horsepower can be taken from the engine – without overloading – by changing the pitch.
    • Even if the engine drives a winch or a shaft generator, the number of revolutions can be kept constant – and the speed of the vessel can then be regulated by means of the propeller pitch.
    • At speeds lower than the maximum speed the engine’s fuel consumption can be reduced considerably by increasing the pitch and lowering the number of revolutions while maintaining the required speed. In this way, the loading of the engine and the total efficiency of the unit is increased.
    • When using sail and engine power at the same time the correct pitch can always be obtained so that wind and engine together are utilized in the best possible way.
    • Prompt and inexpensive replacement of individual blades in case of damage to the propeller.
    • Engine idle speed on a fixed pitch propeller vessel often propels the vessel too fast for docking manoeuvres whereas a CP propeller offers superior low speed vessel control.
  • SPS Drive
A saildrive leg that offers minimal resistance, is lightweight and capable of propulsion and regeneration....

  • The SPS (Saildrive Propulsion System) provides minimal resistance and offers the following features:

    - The system is lightweight
    - Using CP Propeller
    - Capable of both propulsion and regeneration
    - Require minimum space inside the hull and engine room
    - Can be positioned near the centre of the vessel, for optimum weight distribution
    - Highly efficient when motoring.
    - Replace a normal stern propeller

The SPS stays down with the propeller able to go into a feathering position. This will give a little resistance when sailing but the resistance is far less than from a normal shaft, P bracket and propeller in a sailing position. The SPS takes up a lot less space in the engine room since there is no need for a wet box.

The SPS can be driven by an electrical motor or a combustion engine.

The SPS can have an electrical motor mounted directly on top of the leg. This will take up as little space as possible in the engine room

  • Pitch Control Unit
Hundested Propeller first made a pitch control unit in 1929, and since then we have refined our units through the years. They are designed to be installed aft of a standard reduction gearbox without built-in pitch control or with direct electric drives....

  • We made our first pitch control units in 1929 for the Hundested engine in connection with our propeller system. This was of the mechanical type with a big hand wheel to change the pitch. A lot has changed since then. We have used this extensive experience to update our units through the years. Our pitch control units are shaft line units designed to be installed aft of a standard reduction gearbox without built-in pitch control or with direct electric drives.

    This system has many advantages:

    • In combination with a conversion from a fixed into a controllable pitch propulsion system.
    • If a very noise and vibration-free installation is required.
    • If a reverse function in combination with a controllable pitch system is required.
The shaft line pitch control units all have built-in thrust bearings, long stroke for feathering propellers and can be delivered with semi-flexible foundations for very low noise applications. We can supply two different types of pitch control units. The difference is in the way the pitch is activated: It can either be electrically (FR-ELH) or hydraulically (FR-HP) activated. We can also supply a system (FR-HFC) with an O.D. box built onto an existing reduction gearbox without built-in pitch control. We supply our pitch control units to superyachts, mega yachts, and commercial vessels used for fishing and ferries. Our units can be installed on all types of vessels.
