  Re-introducing the Lamp that put CP Lighting on the Map

  25 years ago, Christopher Poehlmann’s career focus on one-off art furniture and lighting shifted to a slightly more production driven enterprise. The culprit? The sudden and wide ranging popularity of a single small fixture called the Cup + Saucer Sconce.   Set up at the back wall of their booth at the International Contemporary Furniture fair (ICFF) as a graphic beacon the Cup + Saucer Sconces turned out to be the draw that put CP Lighting on the world stage.  

  This year CP Lighting is pleased to introduce the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Cup + Saucer Sconce at BDNY trade fair in NYC November 11-12, 2018.  Upgraded to hand blown glass made from up-cycled wine bottles, this new wall sconce retains the quirky charm of the original 1994 design made from salvaged thrift store Melmac plastic dinnerware.  

  The 25th Anniversary Edition is hand blown and available in a full spectrum of standard bottle glass colors, keeping with the CP Lighting values of sustainability and customization.  Each sconce is unique, perfect for homes and hotels, restaurants and retail. The designer states “My original Cup + Saucer Sconce was a run-away surprise success back in 1994. We used salvaged Melmac dinnerware to build in variety and give these quirky sconces individual character. It seems fitting 25 years later to update the design that put CP Lighting on the map by using mouth blown up-cycled bottle glass. The new design adds a degree of luxe while retaining the recycled ethos of the original as well as it's mass customization appeal. “

  In it’s heyday, the original Cup + Saucer Sconce was widely loved, garnering press coverage in publications as diverse as Metropolis and Country Living magazines, Around 40 publications across the globe published images of this sconce in the first year of it’s introduction alone.  Part of its appeal was it’s cheeky good looks, but also the idea that CP Lighting was embarking on something new in the industry that would become known as mass customization. The salvaged Melmac used for the sconces was made in a wide variety of color and style variations, enough to give this product a one of a kind feel through mix-matching, but also gave the company the ability to match color choices to client’s desires.  This hands on customization has been a cornerstone of CP Lighting products ever since.

  CP Lighting’s Up-cycled LiquorLamps Go Floral

  Designer Christopher Poehlmann is a tireless promoter of recycling and sustainable design.  For decades, up-cycled materials have been the cornerstone of his company CP Lighting’s practice, never quite obvious but always an added value to the environment and an example of ethical use of resources.  For the 2018 BDNY exhibit, CP Lighting is pleased to introduce the Petal Pendant.  These minimal pendants consist of a reflector over an exposed E12 base light bulb with a decorative post and site adjustable braided cord.  The reflector is hand blown from glass bottles in a full spectrum of colors from up-cycled wine, champaign and liquor bottles we are all familiar with.  The hand formed glass guarantees that these affordable fixtures are always unique.  Perfect individually, the Petal Pendants also play very well in groups.  UL Listed and ready for residential, commercial and hospitality applications.

  Designer Christopher Poehlmann has been advocating re-use and re-cycling in design since the early 1990’s with his found object assemblages and innovative recycled acrylic lighting. More recently, he has been working with a glass blowing company that interprets his designs using up-cycled glass from liquor and wine bottles. This season marks the introduction of a variety of wall sconces that span the full style range of the LiquorLamp series.  

  Combining the beauty and variations of of hand blown glass with the ethos of a lifelong recycler, these fixtures are prime examples of sustainable design. Poehlmann takes a common waste product and reworks it into a luxurious durable product. The new LiquorLamp Sconces are now available in a range of price points depending upon the style of the glass shade. The PetalPendants offer the most affordable entry point at $250 each, while the Antiqued Silver LiquorLamp shades are at the high end of the line with a $1200 list price each.  Shown here with brass and black hardware, CP Lighting is pleased to offer other hardware alternatives to match interior needs from traditional to contemporary.

  Designer Obsessed with Fake Wood Now Sees the Wood for the Trees

  For nearly 25 years, internationally acclaimed designer Christopher Poehlmann has been messing with the nature of Nature.  His wildly successful newGROWTH series, tree branch forms made from fabricated aluminum, helped spur the Organic Modern movement. His Rustic Modern furniture line begun in 1994 has shown that there can be a successful synthesis of rustic with ideas as disparate as DeStijl, Bauhaus and even cartoon aesthetic.  His carved acrylic LumberLamps have a quirky contemporary edge while still referencing 2x4s and wood rounds.  

  Poehlmann is currently embracing the beauty of translucent wood veneer.  The WoodShade Pendants are offered in two veneers along with two distinctly different accent supports.  For a very contemporary vibe, CP Lighting offers a translucent frosted acrylic support post that has a barely visible brass rod at its center.  The frosted acrylic pulls light from the fixture for a soft glow that fades as it travels up the 12” support.  For a more organic modern feel, the designer fabricates custom tree branches as the support post, quite similar to his newGROWTH work.  Either incarnation offers a stunning fixture with a beautiful wood glow and a soft down light perfect for kitchens or cafes.

  Innovations in Incalmo Glass: The High Design Art of Recycling at CP Lighting

  Product designer Christopher Poehlmann had been kicking an idea around in his head for the past 15 or so years.  Combining two colors of glass for a series of lamp shades.  A simple plan and just one of many items on an unlimited agenda of possibilities for this prolific self taught designer who in that time has become well know as one of the innovators of the new Organic Modern style.  He has also been on the forefront of recycled and up-cycled design since the early 1990’s.  Finally, last year the perfect storm of events made this long term gestation of an idea into a reality.  Poehlmann happened to walk into a local Philadelphia glass studio specializing in up-cycled bottle glass in early 2017 and a new collaboration was born. 

  The local glass shop, Remark Glass, informed Poehlmann that the two part glass process he had in mind is called Incalmo, defined by Corning Museum of Glass as:  

  (Italian) The technique of constructing an object, usually a vessel, by fusing two or more blown glass elements. The process, first practiced in the Islamic world in the Middle Ages, demands great precision because the edges of the adjoining elements must have precisely the same diameter.

  The catch was that this process has been practiced exclusively in hot glass as it has similar yet distinctly different characteristics than the previously blown bottle glass that Remark specializes in.  For the past few years, the blowers at Remark have been perfecting their technique making barware and serving pieces and were fully prepared for the designs Poehlmann presented.  When CP Lighting launched the new Incalmo Pendants and Sconces at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in NYC, it became clear how innovative this new series is.  Glass blowers and dealers from the US and abroad visited the booth numerous times to marvel and compliment on the technical accomplishment.  One glass rep from Czechoslovakia stated that he has been in the glass business for decades and thought he had seen it all, but the use of up-cycled bottle glass for Incalmo was something quite new and innovative. Another glass maker from the States claimed that the blowers at Remark had done what many think of as impossible.  

  CP Lighting is pleased to showcase these remarkable blown glass lamps at the 2018 BDNY trade show this November in booth 268.  On hand will be examples of the LED Incalmo Pendants and LED Wall sconces as well as a new wall sconce design with a back plate and arm that holds an incandescent version of the Incalmo Pendant.  All Incalmo fixtures are available in choice of standard bottle glass colors with a contrasting accent lip including clear, brown, blue and a variety of greens.

  CP Lighting Re-imagines Nature Once Again

  This November designer Christopher Poehlmann will once again bring his company CP Lighting to NYC for the BDNY trade show to debut new work including the all new Stalactite Pendants.

  No stranger to being inspired by nature, Poehlmann once again re-imagines a natural form in an industrial material as an abstracted yet functional sculptural form.  The Stalactite Pendants are at once familiar and foreign, Brutalist and Naturalist, Form and Function.  Perfect for an interior that requires an infusion of modern yet organic style.     

  Each Stalactite Pendant is lamped with a single 4.7w LED module which casts an irregular window of warm, 2750K light on the surface below through the four faceted ends of the fixture.

  Built by hand in Philadelphia one at a time, each fixture retains a uniqueness due to the random texturing and hand applied finish options.  Standard finishes are Antique Brass and Antique Bronze, custom variations are available.
