  • Two new modular belt solutions from Habasit bring new possibilities for industrial packaging applications, especially in applications where space is at a premium. The HabasitLINK M2592 raised deck radius belt saves up to 5 times the space needed for a traditional radius conveyor. The HabasitLINK M0870 HighGrip Micropitch delivers 50 per cent lower minimum transfer distance, enabling use of grip top plastic belts on nosebar applications with a knife edge down to 6 mm.

Conveyors for use in the packaging industry face several challenges including limited floor space for machines, meaning belts must operate in tight spaces and at tight angles. It is crucial that conveyors are optimised for the space, so they don’t harm production layout. Furthermore, the relatively large transfers achievable with traditional grip top modular belts led to many customers being unable to take advantage of modular belts. The two new products from Habasit help to overcome these limitations.

“Plastic modular belts with a grip top feature are ideally suited for incline and decline solutions. However, until now they were unavailable for tight transfer conveyors,” explained Anders Nilsson, R&D portfolio manager for HabasitLINK. “The new M0870 HighGrip Micropitch 0.3” provides reliable product positioning with no slippage and transfers as narrow as 23 mm, a 50 per cent reduction compared to other grip-top modular belts.

“With its high grip surface, this micropitch belt also allows for higher operating speeds in some applications because of the reduced product slippage on the belt. It also copes better than traditional modular belts in incline and decline applications.”

The second novelty by Habasit is the M2592 Radius Raised Deck 1”, which allows to optimize line layout and reduce the conveyor system footprint.

“We understand that, for many businesses, space is at a premium and this has caused problems in finding suitable plastic modular belts for packaging applications,” continued Nilsson. “The M2592 space saver belt allows customers to save up to five times the floor space compared to alternative solutions. This permits increased flexibility in terms of plant and production layout.

“Furthermore, thanks to the raised deck surface, customers can transport products with a wide range of sizes, from small boxes to wide pans, without interference from lateral wearstrips. This is in addition to the fact that it is one of the most robust belts available for radius applications, enabling longer conveyors and less drives and delivering an overall lower cost.

“Finally, it is worth noting that plastic belts emit less noise when transporting crates and pans compared to using rollers or chains. This facilitates a better working environment while also helping to protect the pans and crates being transferred from damage,” concluded Nilsson.

  • Food industry applications require belts offering excellent release, efficient and easy cleanability, and chemical and hydrolysis resistance for wet and humid environments. TPO belts fit the bill exactly. But until now, food producers have had to use a different type of belt for steeper incline or decline applications due to limitations on adding the accessories necessary for transferring loose products at an angle. Now there is a solution: Habasit® Cleanline belts equipped with cleats for inclines/declines, enabling the same standardized cleaning processes and shorter overall sanitation times.

All Habasit Cleanline conveyor belts are coated with a special thermoplastic olefins that supports hygienic food conveying. The belts offer easy cleanability even by hot water or chlorine-based agents, high elasticity in a wide temperature range, and decreased risk of contamination due to excellent surface quality without any micro-cracks where bacteria can hide. Until now, however, despite their many advantages for hygienic conveying, they have not been suitable for steeper incline/decline applications due to limitations on attaching accessories, such as cleats, which prevent goods from rolling down.

    TPO belts with unique cleats

As the first company on the market to meet this need, Habasit has launched Habasit Cleanline belts fabricated with welded cleats. With a specially developed material and unique joining process, the cleats offer sufficient stiffness to convey goods even on steep inclines, with perfect product release and full food contact compliance.

Four different heights of TPO cleats are available to cover the majority of requirements on incline and decline applications, where portion or product separation is needed, or where loose goods are harder to transfer otherwise. By using Habasit Cleanline TPO belts on these applications, food processors can now clean their entire line using the same operation, ensuring significant cost savings on labor, water, electricity, and above all, time.

    Hygienic, efficient and environmentally sound

Habasit Cleanline belts and the new generation of cleats feature an innovative coating material that provides excellent release. Products containing carbohydrates come off its surface easily, reducing waste and increasing the throughput of the production line. Improved cleanability also provides environmental benefits, such as lower water and detergent consumption, meaning less pollution and lower use of resources, thus lower costs. The outstanding resistance of the belts to chemicals and even hot water makes them highly reliable with a long service life.

In short, Habasit's Cleanline belts with welded cleats are ideal for food processors seeking sanitation simplification and cleaning standardization for their food-compliant incline/decline manufacturing lines. This solution offers not only optimized efficiency, but also improved profitability – whatever the ups and downs of the market.

  • Belt scrapers are essential on food processing lines for removing product residue from belt surfaces and maintaining hygienic conditions. But since scraper bars are frequently made of metal and hard plastic, they can damage the belt surface on contact, leading to cracks and scratches that are potential breeding grounds for bacteria and can compromise food safety standards. Damaged surfaces also reduce belt service life. Now Habasit can offer a superior alternative solution: a belt-friendly TPU scraper bar for fabric and monolithic belts. Efficient in the removal of product residue, TPU scraper bars ensure better hygiene, are safer for belt surfaces, and easier to clean.

Belt scrapers are used on food processing lines to meet several process challenges. With the introduction of its new TPU scraper bar, Habasit is further improving the benefits this essential component brings to food processors.

The primary function of the scraper is to remove waste and debris from the belt surface during production. When scraping is done correctly, the benefits range from improved operational efficiency to better hygiene and food safety. This is because material build-up can lead to a loss of sprocket engagement, or tracking issues from residue build-up on roller drums causing belt edge damage and increased motor wear and energy consumption. Poor scraping that leaves product residue on the belt can result in spillage and material accumulation on the return roller, posing a potential risk of bacterial growth and cross contamination.

Metal and hard plastic scrapers can damage belt surfaces

Because belt scrapers help to resolve so many issues, the food processing industry has put up for years with a major disadvantage of rigid metal and hard plastic scraper bars: the risk of damaging the belt surface. When cracked and scratched, the belt becomes harder to clean, and cracks can become a home for bacteria to grow. Furthermore, such damage reduces the self-cleaning effect of surfaces with excellent release. Belts may also need more frequent replacement, meaning additional costs for new belts and line stoppages.

Key advantages of flexible TPU scraper bars

While classic belt scrapers are usually completely inflexible, the Habasit TPU scraper has the advantage of a flexible tip, which translates to three key advantages:

No risk of damaging the belt surface - due to the reduced pressure applied between the scraping bar and the belt.
More efficient cleaning - since the TPU scraping tip follows the belt surface at all times. The flexible tip also offers an advantage over metal or hard plastic scrapers mounted on a flexible rig, as rigid material on a tip lets belt irregularities push the scraping bar away from the roller, resulting in uneven cleaning.
Easier cleaning – as liquids like oil, water and detergents are better dealt with by a flexible TPU scraper bar which maintains continuous contact with the belt surface.

    Array of options available

Habasit's new belt scraper bars are available in TPU Polyester and TPU Polyether, with a range of tip hardnesses from 85 to 95 ShA. The TPU Polyether scraper bars are particularly suitable for applications involving higher temperatures and humidity, where hydrolysis resistance is required. The TPU scraper bars come in a standard 2.4 m length that can be adjusted to customer requirements. X-ray and metal detectable versions are available for additional food safety requirements. The TPU scraper bars are food-contact compliant and fulfill both EU and FDA requirements.

  • Introducing the Habaclip Sidewall Joining Clip, a new accessory available for Habasit Cleandrive belts with sidewalls.

Cleandrive belts are frequently used with sidewalls that maintain products on the belt surface. This benefit of sidewalls is absent at the mechanical splice location, where the sidewalls from each end of the belt cannot be welded. As a result, there is a gap at the belt edge where conveyed product can either get trapped or escape the belt surface.

The Habaclip solves this problem. Its single-piece durable thermoplastic construction provides a tight, continuous barrier. It does this by mechanically joining the two sidewall ends where the belt is laced.

    Habaclip key features:

    • Installs without special tools
    • FDA and EU compliant
    • Hygienic and hydrolysis-resistant design withstands demanding industry sanitation protocols
    • Compatible with the Saniclip making belt removal and cleaning even faster and easier

  • In keeping with Habasit’s focus on creating sustainable, high-performance, and value belting solutions, we’re pleased to introduce these new and improved TPU food belts.

The improved design and materials of theFMB-5EMCT-W2 and FMB-5EMWT-W2 features greater longitudinal flexibility, excellent layer adhesion, expanded operating temperature range, longer service life, and a lower environmental impact. They present excellent resistance to oils and fats, a wide range of cleaning and sanitizing chemicals, and are easy to clean.

These new belts are particularly well suited for processing and primary food packaging applications in bakery and confectionery operations; such as cooling lines, transfer belts, inspection tables, and more. They are also valuable solutions for applications in frozen foods, pasta, pastry, pizza, and ready-to-eat meals.
