Companies around the world looking to lower their environmental impact and carbon footprint are turning to sustainability initiatives such as Zero Waste to significantly improve their environmental stewardship, corporate responsibility profile, and ESG rankings.

To help you communicate how you reduce, recycle and re-use your waste, the SCS Zero Waste Standard provides a basis for certification for waste diversion and reduction at your individual facilities. Certification provides a 3rd party assurance that waste elements are reused, prevented or diverted from the landfill.

Certification can be used to communicate your company’s journey towards eliminating landfill-bound waste generation at your facilities. The annual zero waste assessment captures the amount of waste diverted from landfill as a percentage of total waste generated.

Under the SCS Zero Waste standard, all corporate facilities will be evaluated, and a sample will be audited onsite. Facilities demonstrating at least 50% waste diversion can be recognized under this SCS standard. All claims are based on a twelve-month period.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs): SCS has an experienced in-house life cycle assessment (LCA) team that manages every aspect of the EPD process, collaborating with you to ensure a smooth, efficient LCA and an accurate EPD. As a Program Operator, we offer two services:

1. LCA and EPD Development. SCS conducts the LCA and prepares the EPD report based on the appropriate PCR. We then work with an external third-party to independently verify the EPD before publishing.
2. EPD Verification. If you already have completed an LCA, SCS can critically review the LCA and provide a template for the EPD. SCS will verify the EPD against the LCA report and designated PCR.

Health Product Declarations (HPDs): HPDs provide a full disclosure of the potential chemicals of concern in products by comparing product ingredients to a set of priority “hazard” lists based on the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals and additional lists from other government agencies. HPDs qualify for numerous green building schemes, including LEED v4, WELL, Google Portico, and Living Product Challenge.

1. Full Service (Preparation and Verification): In partnership with a leading toxicology firm, SCS will prepare and verify your HPDs. SCS will manage the entire process from start to finish.

2. HPD Verification: If you have already prepared an HPD, SCS will verify the HPD and provide you with a verified HPD.

Forest Stewardship Council® Chain of Custody (FSC®): Assure customers that your wood and paper products meet the world's most stringent environmental, ethical, and economic sourcing standards with Forest Stewardship Council® Chain-of-Custody (FSC CoC) certification. Whether you are a sawmill, papermill manufacturer, broker, distributor, wholesaler, retailer, or printer, FSC CoC certification gives you access to the growing global market for responsibly sourced wood and paper products.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Chain of Custody (SFI®): The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Chain of Custody Standard is one of the leading certifications to show consumers and stakeholders that your wood and paper products are sourced responsibly by tracking fiber content from certified responsible forests. 

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC): If you are seeking to assure your customers that your wood and paper products meet the Chain-of-Custody (CoC) requirements of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) program, SCS can help.
