The Art of Perception

Amy Herman is a lawyer and art historian who uses works of art to sharpen observation, analysis, and communication skills. Looking closely at works of art, she helps individuals to hone their visual intelligence to recognize the most pertinent information and recognize biases that impede decision making. She developed The Art of Perception to improve medical students’ observation and communication skills when she was the Head of Education at The Frick Collection in New York City. She adapted the program for a wide range of professionals including the NYC Police Department, the FBI, the State Department, Fortune 500 companies, and the military. In her presentation, she demonstrates the relevance of visual literacy and how the analysis of works of art affords participants in her program an innovative way to refresh critical inquiry for more effective leadership. Her book, Visual Intelligence, published in May 2016, was on the New York Times and Washington Post best sellers’ lists.
