Description

TABLE 2: Virtual manipulatives can transform how students make meaning of important mathematical ideas by making abstract relationships visible, by teaching creativity and problem-solving, and by allowing students to explore and discover. Attendees will learn about the four benefits of virtual manipulatives: creating opportunities for students to discover ideas for themselves, allowing students to move from concrete representations to abstract ideas at their own pace, allowing students to go beyond what is possible in the physical world, and structuring opportunities for creativity, engagement, and joy. Attendees will engage in activities and lessons in the four categories listed above to experience for themselves how virtual manipulatives can enhance and elevate math instruction. Time at the end will be available for attendees to create their own activities and interactive workspaces for students. The session will use the free virtual manipulatives and tools available on Polypad from Mathigon.
