Description
Moving education from the school to the home presents many challenges and opportunities for schools. While virtual learning can develop more independent, real-world based learners, it also presents challenges regarding student confidentiality, privacy, and safety. Attorney Dianna Bowen will provide guidance regarding the disclosure of personally identifiable information from a student's education records under FERPA when conducting remote learning. Using real-life scenarios, Dianna will discuss exceptions under FERPA and address various areas where confidentiality concerns may arise, including classroom observations, use of emails, videos, and other virtual learning tools. Finally, Dianna will share a checklist to help evaluate online learning platforms under FERPA that will focus on the benefits of virtual learning while addressing both confidentiality and safety concerns.
